Skipping wedding band altogether?

FinallyMrsT, on March 27, 2015 at 9:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

Is anyone just not having a wedding band at all? I don't think I had even heard of people having an e-ring AND a wedding band until a couple years ago, and back when we started looking at rings I couldn't imagine ever wanting anything more on my finger. Naturally, now I'm so used to seeing my ring that I'm open to having a second, but I don't know...I just don't feel like I need anything else on there. FH has always been adamant that he wants me to have a band, as well, and I guess it would be nice to have a simpler ring to wear on its own, if I ever don't want my e-ring on.

Are any of you having the same thoughts?

I'm surprised you never heard of that. I feel like the wedding band is the more important one if you are comparing it with an e-ring. The e-ring is just a promise that you will get married. The wedding band is a promise that you will be with that person for the rest of your life. I can't imagine not wearing one.

No. I've never known it to be any other way then to receive an engagement ring followed by a wedding band.

FH purchased my wedding band with my engagement ring as a package, because he bought them together he saved money and he made sure they coordinated well.

Neither of us is getting a wedding band. For me, it would ruin the look of my ring and FH just doesn't want one.

For the wedding we are using my engagement ring and his fathers wedding ring.

^^^Same. FH works where wearing a wedding band is dangerous (constantly works machinery) he inherited his grandfathers wedding band, so we are using it.

Honestly, I didn't buy a wedding band until a few months after the wedding. We used my e-ring during the ring ceremony. I mostly wear the band at work when I have to work a lot with my hands and where my e-ring out shopping and to dinner. Occasionally I pair them.

I've never heard of not having a wedding band. I've always seen both. I've seen women who rarely wear their e-ring, or wear their e-ring on their right hand, but I've never seen no wedding band.

@FutureMrsWalton -- That's actually kind of what I meant...I don't remember any of my friends' moms having engagement rings at all growing up. It was always just a wedding band. Then once I started even being aware of e-rings, I never noticed a band with them...although maybe I really was just too uneducated ring-wise to know what I was looking at haha

@FutureMrsT -Okay, makes sense now. I thought you meant the other way around. I've always seen them paired together so that's how I will wear mine. I will always wear them together and I don't plan on ever taking them off. I know some people don't share my opinion though Smiley smile

The only reason why I would consider not getting one is because I haven't found a band that truly compliments by ring. Petite band with center stone with all the attention. I don't want to get anything that away from it but I might get something to wear without my e-ring.

FH got my e-ring in a package with the wedding band. I honestly Can't stand wearing my e-ring because it's so big! I'll probably just end up wearing my band once we get married. But I've seen other women not wear their wedding bands so if you don't have one that's okay as well I would think.

I'm debating it as well. I feel like adding another bad would take away from the engagement ring. It has so much detail and I don't want to hide it

The ring I went with I will be getting two bands. One if the rings I loved already looked like it had bands but it was all one ring. With that one I would not of added a wedding band.

Yeah I never knew about the wedding band til I was proposed to. FH told me what he learned at the store and I go "I get another ring?" Lol. I guess I never paid attention to women my age that were married and our parents generation just had one ring each and no long engagement or at all. My FH got me a wedding band to match my e ring and I plan to wear both, but to me, the engagement ring is the important one because this is the ring he chose without me and he made the decision to ask me to marry him. I know others feel different.

Engagement rings are a relatively new thing in history, wedding bands have been around for hundreds, maybe thousands of years!

LOL - So, I read this and thought "wedding band" as in music, Smiley smile. I don't know where my mind is, but in reference to the post, I will be wearing both. I didn't realize people didn't know about both; that interesting. I say do what you and your FH want, come to a compromise and roll with it. Smiley smile

I have been married 5 years and only wear one ring. I've never seen it as just an engagement ring, but we eloped so it's always been my wedding band. I understand the whole "promise" that the e-ring symbolizes followed by the "commitment" of the wedding band though. Also, my ring is too pretty to cover up with a wedding band. There is so much detail on the sides that would be covered up and if just won't do it. Eta: pics

The people at Shane Co were telling me that the trend of adding a wedding band to the engagement ring is a relatively recent thing. My understanding is that it used to just be a wedding band on the day of the wedding, then when engagement rings started to become a thing people just used that same ring during the ceremony, and that was it; but now, in the last decade or two, the jewelry industry has convinced people that they need more -- which, of course, we do Smiley smile

Mine was bought as a set. The band can't be worn without the e-ring so I'll wear both.
