So my FH apparently wanted to surprise me for the holidays. He started asking me questions yesterday and finally just caved and said he is too nervous about spending that kind of money on jewelry without my input since I don't wear jewelry (I am extremely allergic to nickel, it burns my skin, so I usually skip jewelry all together). I started helping him find/design a wedding band to which he said "shouldn't we start with the engagement ring and match the band to that". It never even crossed my mind that I would get an e-ring, so I was kind of in shock. He started asking questions about ring styles and carat size and I am now so lost and a little stressed. I want to pick something I love but all of these decisions are intimidating.... Solitaire, studded, 3 stone, Halo.... There are so many choices my head is spinning so I decided to ask you for some help. Can you show me your engagement ring and tell me a little about it? If you helped design or chose your ring, how did you decide on that particular one? How did you decide what carat size to pick, what setting to choose, and wether or not to add accent stones? I feel stupid not knowing about all of this stuff and I tend to be indecisive in general so this one is kinda tough for me. I don't want to make the wrong choice and regret it...

This is the e-ring with my wedding band (before it was resized). I love them together Smiley smile the e-ring is .75 carrot with a 14k white gold band. My fiancé picked out the individually picked out the diamond and the specific band to set it in Smiley smile I love that he put thought into all of it and didn’t just pick out the first ring he saw when he walked in a store. He said he started about a year before we got engaged researching diamonds and all that Smiley smile

Just got engaged this past weekend! It's 1.5 carats overall, white gold, round halo and round diamond with a split shank band. I love the story behind it. Originally I wanted square halo with a cushion cut stone, which I actually would say most of my friends have gotten, but when he went to the jeweler the jeweler said he didn't want to sell him that ring because it was 'cookie cutter' and in five years from now everyone will have that same ring. He showed him this ring and my fiance knew right away it was what he wanted. I could not be happier with it.

Go to the store and see what you like! Go to a couple different stores! Sometimes what you think you will like, doesn’t actually look good on you (just like buying the dress!)

I don’t know the carat weight of my ring but it is exactly what I wanted. I believe it to be a half carat or .75 center stone. My fiancé picked it out on his own withy best friend confirming his choice, and I had also sent him photos of what I liked. He knew it was really important to me that it has “twisty dos” and that the wedding band would fit right with it and look like part of the ring. The second photo is with my band. They are off this afternoon to be soldered together before the wedding!

Here’s mine! My fiancé did an absolutely amazing job picking my e-ring out. The center stone is 1.5 c and he got the super thin band with small diamonds encrusted in. I am a size 5.

That is really pretty! And that's a good point, we could add an anniversary ring on the other side down the line.

This is the exact ring my FH is looking at too! We are looking at a black diamond studded band for me to match his. Something like this.

Mine is a platinum oval halo. The center stone is 1.5 carats. I tried on a bunch to decide what I thought looked best on my hand!

Here’s mine! 0.72 carat solitaire, radiant cut, and the ratio is so that it’s slightly longer than it is wide (I have really long thin fingers so this looked way better on me better than one that had a 1:1 ratio). It’s important to learn about the things that make diamonds good quality:

-Cut. Not all shapes are labeled like this (I know round diamonds are, but not sure about the others). But if there is a cut rating, you probably want one that’s either “excellent” or “very good,” and “good” is acceptable. But less than that very much lowers the value of the stone.
-Clarity: there are imperfections with every stone. In a perfect world, you’d get a stone rated as “flawless” (that is an option) but that’s not really necessary. If you get one rated VVS1 or VVS2 (very very slight inclusions on 1 level, or very very slight inclusions on 2 levels) it looks flawless to the naked eye. (Mine is VVS2). There’s also VS1 and VS2 which are still good. Once you get into SI1 or SI2 then you start seeing some visible inclusions and a much lower quality stone. Never get one that’s I1 or I2... most jewelers wouldn’t even sell you that.
-Color: D, E, and F color ratings are colorless stones. G, H, and I are supposedly colorless tj the naked eye (then once you get to J it’s noticeably yellow), but I’ve been told by my jeweler that you really don’t want a color rating lower than G (mine is G, and it looks completely colorless).
-Fluorescence: you want NO fluorescence. Fluorescence can cause it to appear blue in certain lighting, instead of sparkling white.

Those are the things you’ll need to keep an eye out for, and ask the jeweler about before you buy a stone, to make sure the value of the stone is worth what you are paying for it. You’ll want to see the GIA report of the stone before you buy it (which will have all that info). If they say it isn’t GIA rated, I wouldn’t trust it since that means it’s value hasn’t been evaluated. You theoretically could be spending more on the diamond than it is worth.

Also, I learned in terms of size, you get a better value for the stone if the size is slightly smaller than a “standard” size. So like, if you want a 1 carat stone, I’d recommend looking at a 0.97 carat stone. It will look exactly the same because it’s only microscopically smaller, and it will probably be MUCH less expensive than if you were to get “1 carat.” My ring is 0.72 and was significantly cheaper than the “3/4 carat stones.” But they look exactly the same.

In terms of style, here’s what I’ve found to be super helpful for myself, and it’s worked for my MOH too (who we know is getting engaged soon and is starting to look at rings for herself lol). Just do this: picture your engagement ring, and picture yourself wearing an “engagement ring.” What does that look like to you? For me, I kept being drawn to all the complicated, intricate ring designs in the store because they’re all so pretty haha. But when I closed my eyes and pictured what “my engagement ring” looked like to me, it was ALWAYS just a simple solitaire stone on a white gold band. A more complex ring would’ve been beautiful, but it wasn’t fitting to what MY vision of an engagement ring looked like. Make sure that you not only like the ring, but that it feels like an engagement ring to you. (Btw just because a solitaire is what felt like an engagement ring to me doesn’t mean that’ll be the exact same thing for you, I’m just using myself as an example lol). Just make sure it fits whatever your vision of “engagement ring” is. You can always get a different ring for an anniversary or other occasion!

This is mine, I dont own any jewelry either and my fiance chose to ask me with what he called a "cheap" ring because he didnt want to spend that type of money on something I may not like. Then we actually went to the jewelry store together where he let me pick what I liked. My center stone is .5 and the side diamonds only go halfway down on each side I found the ones that go all the way around were uncomfortable.

I would highly suggest going to a store and trying some on. What I thought I wanted and what looked best on my hand were very different.

I didn't want a halo (SO MANY HALOS out there!). That eliminated about 90% of the rings that most jewelers had in stock. We ended up designing mine. They had the rose gold diamond band, we picked a center stone, then a basket. We had a really hard time finding the right basket because I wanted it to be double pronged and have diamonds in it. It had to be large enough to hold a 2 carat cushion cut stone. Apparently that is not a very common size/cut so it really limited our options. I love my ring. It is more than I ever dreamed of!

I really didn't think my husband would care that much about his ring. I was wrong! He can only wear it when we go out (safety reasons at work) but he wanted the bling! I almost ordered him the black band with the rose gold stripe, but I would have been way off!

Here is mine with & without the wedding bands. I believe it is a 1 1/6 cut diamond with 14k white gold band. I gave my husband ideas on what I kinda liked since I used to try rings on all the time when my mom worked at a jeweler, but gave him free rein to pick the one that he thought suited me. I am still in love with it. What won me over was the unique bands! Smiley smile

My fiancé took my sister. I think he did a wonderful job and I love my ring. I originally thought I wanted a halo, but he decided to go with a better quality diamond than the more expensive setting because I can always get it reset, but I absolutely love it!

mine is a 1.27 carat brilliant round set in 18k white gold. I have a size 9 finger.

I fell in love with this ring at a local jeweler 4 years ago. We actually got married 18 months ago but so quickly because of the military that we skipped an actual engagement. So just last month we went in to this store and when asked what type of ring we were looking for, I just pointed right at MY ring haha. The perks of already being married I guess? I loved how dainty the band was and that for a 3 stone halo design it wasn't bulky. I think it's a bit unique with a center round cut diamond with 2 cushion side stones all in cushioned halos. I feel like in all the big stores, the 3 stone halos the halos would make all 3 stones look the same size and I like that the 2 side ones actually appear smaller. The setting in store was already my perfect fit size 7 & we picked a stone out to place in as well. It's 18k white gold with a brilliant round center stone, 1.6ctw. I can't wait to add another band on top when we have our big wedding, think it will be a pave ring Smiley smile Show me your engagement ring! 18
