Should I ship my wedding dress, pack it, or carry it on?

Brynna, on October 17, 2016 at 10:53 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

My wedding is on December 3rd and it’s taking place in California- that’s where my family is- but right now I’m in Kentucky. I have my dress here and in November I will be flying with American Airlines to California, just 1 stop in Texas. I know shipping my dress could be expensive and I won’t be able to control how it gets there. However, when I contacted customer services for American Airlines, the guy said he couldn’t promise anything, the first class closet is only for first class and my dress may end up stuffed in a bin. Basically, he was no help. My first plane is rather small (hey, it’s Kentucky). So, they may not even have a closet, but for sure my next flight would. Please help, I’m not sure what I should do.

The first plane is small so even my regular carry-on gets put under the plane. At least, this is what they have done in the past 2 times I have flown this route. I wouldn’t want my dress getting put under the plane.

I'd ship it early using an insured overnight method. Once it's there, ask someone in your family to take it to have it steamed to fix all the inevitable wrinkles. If you carry it on, like you said it might end up under the plane. I trust UPS much, much more than airlines!

FH and I are bringing the tux and dress on the plane, we are not packing them and I don't think I'd trust shipping (with the way my luck with this wedding has gone!)

Maybe see if you can schedule to have it steamed when you arrive to get out any wrinkles. Then gently wrap it so nothing will get on it and carry it on with you.

I would ship it. If your dress is a David's Bridal dress, they'll steam it for free if you had your alterations with them.

I'd ship it UPS, it's probably about the same amount and I'd think a lot safer and less of a hassle than dragging it on the plane and around the other airport.

Carry on, I would never trust it in the hands of someone who did not care about it the way I did!

I got a carryon bag that fits my dress and folds up. I'm going to have my seamstress pack it up, and I bought a steamer to steam the dress.

My dress flew from Boston to Omaha, NE as a carry-on. The second part of the flight was a tiny plane, because like Kentucky, Omaha doesn't exactly have the giant planes coming in and out. Honestly, everyone was really accommodating, the flight attendants were really helpful, and there were no issues with it. I would definitely make plans to steam it out once you get there regardless, though.

I've tried bringing a bridesmaid dress on an American Airlines flight as a carry on and they made me shove it in my bag. They could have cared less that it was just dry cleaned and pressed and that it was for a wedding. It's a risk you take carrying it on...

Carry on! It can get lost if you ship it.. I'm carrying mine with me and will ask flight attendant if it's possible to be hung in captain's closet..

Carry on! Often, the flight attendants are happy to take it and hang it up for you. You can call the airline pro and see if that is a possibility.
