Save the Dates: Handwritten, Calligraphy, or Labels?!

Jeanelle, on December 2, 2015 at 11:01 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

We're getting ready to send out our Save the Dates... I've found lots of advice pertaining to the etiquette on how to properly word the addresses... but I can't find any advice pertaining to how to get those addresses on the envelopes!

Is it appropriate to hand-write in my regular every day plain-jane handwritting?

Do I have to write in cursive?

Do I need to hire a calligrapher?

Is it totally against etiquette to run the labels through a printer?

What about printing on clear labels and sticking those suckers on the envelopes?

I know most people won't care... but my MIL is definitely the type to be offended if I do it wrong. ugh. HELP!

Literally any of these options are fine as long as the addresses are neat, presentable, and readable. Pick the one that matches the style of your save the dates and go with it. There is no correct answer.

Doesn't really matter. I hand wrote the STDs and all thank yous. For the actual invite, I printed directly on the envelope.

I printed directly on the envelope for the STD. I'll be doing the same thing for our invitations.

I had the addresses all printed by the company I ordered from (Minted.com). I love the way they turned out. Personally, I am not a fan of using labels for recipient addressing (I don't even do it for m Christmas cards). I think wedding stationary deserves more than a sticker, too. I'm not even using them for return addresses. This is just my personal opinion (and I paid way more for my STDs and will for my invitations than planned because I fell in live with the design and their ability to do the addressing.

I just hand wrote them, but I wouldn't pay for calligraphy. If I could do it again, I may just save myself the time and have the addresses already printed on the envelopes.

I have a label maker at work, so I used that to make address labels for my STDs. As for invites, my aunt can do calligraphy and has offered to do it for my invites. Neither FH nor I have nice handwriting, so that option was out!

I hated the clear labels so I printed directly onto the envelopes.

I hand wrote my STDs and I dreaded it. Took way too much time. I had about 70 to write... For my invites I did clear labels with a calligraphy font. Looked very neat compared to hand written. No one has said anything about my hand written envelopes or the labels. So IMO its really up to you. They will end up in the trash anyway...

I love writing so I just hand wire all of mine on the envelope. I'll hire a calligrapher for invitations or just print them. I'm actually mailing mine off today Smiley smile good luck!.

I found a calligrapher on etsy and I'll be using her to address the STD's and invitations. I bought a custom stamp for the return address. Depending on how I like it for the STD's I may or may not use it for the actual invitations. There are also many sellers on etsy that will do digital calligraphy printing on your envelopes as well if you don't want to write!

@CMH to CML I understand your pain! I did 50 and my hands were so tried after writing them all. I did them in one sitting to just get them done.

We did clear labels for save the dates and then for our invitations we were able to print the address and return address directly onto our envelopes in a pretty script (although still readable). For the save the dates do yourself a favor and just print labels. You'll go nuts handwriting and hiring a calligrapher is very expensive.

Hi Jeanelle!! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default double rings) so we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other double rings.

Any of those options are great and appropriate! I'd save the fancy and expensive stuff for your invitations Smiley smile

I didn't think it was worth spending the money to get the envelopes printed on, getting labels or paying for calligraphy. I just wrote both addresses on all 80ish envelopes. I did it over a week and seriously wasn't bad at all. I'm kinda shocked that others found it to be awful. Just do it while your watching TV or something and you won't even notice it.

This is something that literally no one cares about and if they do they need to get a life. Think about it, its a piece of paper people rip open and throw in the garbage. And your MIL will deal, its not that serious.

But to answer your question any of the choices you said will be ok. Heres what I did:

My STDs were printed on clear labels.

My invites were done by a calligrapher (not my choice, my bosses wife did them for free and wouldn't take no for an answer)

My thank yous for shower and wedding were hand written in boring everyday handwriting by me

I used clear labels and they worked out great! Honestly, I plan to do the same for invites.
