Room block price?

Mrs.K, on October 27, 2016 at 10:25 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 68

How much is too much to ask people to spend on a hotel room? I live close to Boston, Ma and have received a quote for $219 per night plus tax for a mini suite (all rooms are suites) usual price for june is $259-299 per night plus tax. Im not sure if thats too much for a room block. I know that obviously people dont have to use the hotel we block, but would like to make it as easy as possible and have people all in one hotel...I dont want the price to turn them off! Just looking for opinions on how much is too much!

Also, free Wi-Fi, a breakfast buffet and valet are included in the price!

Too expensive. I'd shoot for $125-150 instead. I wouldn't want a suite personally....

@unawarepandabear thats what I was thinking..but I also think hotel prices are ridiculous anyways so wasn't sure what was acceptable!

@LeahH I am waiting to hear back from a second hotel that I think will be less expensive and that offers us perks for booking a block with them!

I'm hoping to find cheaper, just wasn't sure if it was too much to consider...quite a few of the OOT guests are older people who happen to have money, so I don't know if some of them would even choose to stay in either of the hotels im talking about. They might opt for a fancier hotel...but for everyone else I want something reasonable!

$219 seems a little high to me, but is that standard pricing for the Boston area? I might shop around a little and see if there is anything priced a little more moderately you could offer in addition to this one. Also, is it the mini suite that is driving the price up? Suites are definitely more luxurious, but for a one or two night max stay people would probably be totally fine with a regular hotel room. For reference, I'm in northern NJ which is a pretty high cost of living area and our block is $129 for the night and includes the wi-fi, breakfast, valet, and shuttle service to and from the venue.

@Punkinbear I asked about none suites and they are all what they call 'studio suites' so I don't think there are multiple rooms or anything...just a large room with separate like..living room area. (But I don't think walls)

When I worked at the Renaissance hotel by Marriott, our rack rate was usually $229.00 per night. On average for our wedding blocks they ran from $119-$139 depending on how many rooms were booked in the block. If that gives you any idea. The hotel we booked for our guests is $175 per night but the prices are more because it is downtown. There are other select service hotels in the area that might possibly have rooms for a bit cheaper if my guests want to look into that. We don't have too many out of towners.

If you block rooms at that rate, just make sure to include info on your wedding website about nearby hotels that are more affordable.

I live in the surrounding area of Los Angeles and was able to block rooms for $129 plus tax with hot breakfast and Free WiFi. One of the hotel only have suites and my guests get a federal government rate (which is cheaper than the standard rate) with poof of ID.

We're right outside of NYC and have blocked off rooms at an all suite hotel at $135/night. You can probably do better, over 200 is a little pricey.

We considered the percentage off from the room block price vs the price you'd get just booking it. Our quotes ranged from 10-25% off the normal price, so we went with the 20% off one since it was a good balance of amenities and price.

For Boston - I get why it's that high. Normally I always think less then $150 but Boston is so expensive so I think that's on par with Boston. Does that include parking? I went to Boston a few months ago and spent $250 on the room and then $40 for parking. That hurt. If it includes the price for parking I think it's a good price. But that's in Boston not outside of Boston. I think you could fine better outside of Boston

I was thinking it was higher, but wanted others opinions. I'm always shocked when I hear a hotel price for more than like $150 for a room. But thought I was maybe crazy

The area we are getting married is on the expensive side. The actual resort charges $400 per night. It's insane. The surrounding hotels range from $250-$350. I'm suggesting people rent houses through Airbnb. Most hotels in the summer have 2 night minimums and Airbnb is cheaper. Just give people time to plan and they'll figure it out. Depending on how far they have to travel they may just decide to drive home after.

ETA- Boston is expensive. I think a $125 hotel might be almost impossible. The motel 6 closest to my wedding is $199. Can't get much cheaper than that.

Maybe try and have more than one hotel option. Try for one slightly cheaper. If people need something dirt cheap, you can always leave it up to them though. You should try to cater to a range of budgets to some extent...but you don't have to cater to literally everyone.

Our room block is 85 a night at a Hyatt Place. So nothing really fancy, but it's still nice, clean, and comfortable.

We blocked rooms in downtown Baltimore at a Marriott Springhill Suites and Hotel Monaco, both are $189/night + tax. A Courtyard Marriott was $10/night cheaper, but we went to Springhill Suites because they offered a free shuttle. I would've liked something in the $150 range but that's hard to find in the area of the city we'll be in.
