Rings

Nini, on August 20, 2016 at 12:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

So I'm just curious on ring etiquette. I was under the assumption that when you get engaged you wear your engagement on your left ring finger, and when you tie the knot, your FH places a band on your left finger first, and then he places your initial engagement ring on. In that order. Since being engaged I have been paying more attention to women's hands and rings, and I happen to see women wearing there engagement ring on their right ring finger, or if they have already tied the knot the engagement ring on first then the band to follow on the left ring finger. I'm just interested in knowing is there one set way to do this? Do certain cultures and religion live by different etiquette? Please share your thoughts.... Im just interested in knowing...

I see it differently as well. I think in 2016, people do what they want. Whatever finger doesnt make you any less married.

I think it's just personal choice over "etiquette."

I wear my band on my middle finger because my engagement ring is so big/uniquely shaped.

In the Middle East when they get engaged they wear their wedding rings on the right hand then when they get married they switch to the left hand

I have read that some cultures/religions wear their wedding rings on their right hand, but I couldn't tell you which one(s). I wear my e ring on my left finger, my college class ring on my right. On my wedding day I will wear my e ring on my right, have my wedding band placed on my left, and after the wedding I will wear my college class ring on my right and my wedding band on my left. E ring will only be for special occasions after my wedding. I'm getting tired of wearing it because it catches on things so easily :/

I like my engagement ring so much by itself I am not getting a wedding band. I felt like it took away from the delicate look

It depends largely on preference, though when wearing them together, the band should ALWAYS be on the inside, "closer to the heart."

Some wear their engagement ring on their right hand because they don't like how it looks with the band, or they're uncomfortable together, too bulky together, don't match, etc. others prefer keeping them together and even get them soldered together into one piece. Totally up to you.

I will wear both of my rings on the left ring finger in whatever order I'm happy with. You do what you want (:

Your original thought is correct- the wedding band is wear closest to the body. However, lots of married women don't wear their engagement rings- my mom doesn't, she just wears her wedding band. Lots of women also wear right hand rings that may have diamonds in them - either anniversary rings or some other special ring to them. My mom has a ring she wears on her right hand that has a diamond center stone that she had custom-made to honor her mom (the diamond was her mother's). My friend wears her grandmother's engagement ring that she inherited as a right-hand ring.

I wear my engagement ring on my left ring finger and when I get married I'll wear my band and ring on my left hand. I don't understand no doing it unless it's for cultural or religious reasons. But it's a personal choice.

I also don't understand married people who don't wear their ring (I usually find that people who don't wear a ring also don't behave like a married person would)

I've always had the same thought as you. I think now people are just doing it however they feel comfortable doing it, which is totally fine. I think the way you first described it is the "traditional" way.

What you mention is the tradition for most to wear the band first and close to the heart and then the engagement ring, but as was mentioned, times have changed and people do what they want lol. You do what is comfortable to you. Personally I'm going to try to stick to tradition on this one lol

I thought about wearing the band on the outside -- sort of a guard for the e-ring. But, once the e-ring got sized, I didn't worry about it falling off.

I'm wearing my band on my left ring finger, we haven't found a band that I like to go with it so he'll put my engagement ring on my hand.

I think it's different everywhere. I'm Egyptian but living in Canada, I went on vacation there and they didn't think I was engaged because they normally wear the engagement ring and the band right away. So they kept asking where my second ring is lol. Also I'm Coptic Orthodox Christian and during my engagement ceremony (blessing of the rings really) the ring was expected to be on my right hand. I prefer it on my left so afterwards I just switched it, but yeah for me it's "supposed" to be on my right hand.

@T-Rex I am obsessed with your engagement ring! So gorgeous and unique. On our wedding day I am wearing my E-ring on my right hand so FH can put my wedding band on my left hand. I'll switch my e-ring back to my left hand before pictures.

I don't think there is a right way or a wrong way, I feel like it's a preference thing.
