Revamping Grandma's Wedding Dress

KRaeBride, on November 3, 2016 at 6:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29

Hello there! My dad still has my grandmother's wedding dress from the 1960s, and he told me that I can have it to wear at my wedding. It is an incredibly sweet gesture but the dress is very outdated and doesn't fit quite right. I tried it on but it would definitely need some alterations and modernization. Does any one know of a place that can help me do this? Preferably somewhere in the Bay Area. Thanks!

Lol the pictures are certainly not flattering, but here it is!

It's not what I envisioned for my wedding dress but I'm hoping there is a place that can make it my dream dress Smiley smile

I love it the way it is!

I like the skirt. But I would like the neckline to be sweetheart maybe and to lose the long sleeves. I don't want sleeveless but maybe cap sleeves and I think a keyhole back would look pretty. But I'm not sure if that's possible

It actually look better than I imagined and the lace is really pretty!

Maybe you could take it to the seamstress and consult?

I can recommend my seamstress in the Marina, SF if you like.

I am not in your area so I can't help with a suggestion but it seems what you want should be doable. I had my moms dress altered (I wore it to our rehearsal). I used the same seamstress that did my wedding dress.

I actually think it would look gorgeous if you removed the neckline and sleeves. I'm guessing that there's a layer under the lace across the bust? Would you be open to keeping lace over that part, and use the lace to make a little cap sleeve?

If you go to a seamstress, take some inspo photos of dresses that you like.

I don't know anyone in your area but just wanted to say that it's such a sweet idea! Coming from someone with little to no family it would be an absolute dream to wear a dress that was worn but a family member!

There is another bride that posted earlier.... she wore her mothers dress for the father/daughter dance and I believe first look.

Does your budget allow for a new dress and alterations to your grandmothers?

@Mrs.TacoCat Yes, I would be able to buy a new dress and/or make some alterations to my grandmother's dress

    Here is her Yelp page.

Her name is Mila and she's the only one there. She gets really busy so you have to make an appointment. Good luck!

I attached my dress. I don't know if you can tell what she did!
