Researching venues/vendors when out-of-town?

Madison, on June 9, 2019 at 6:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

Hello! I'm wondering about something it isn't too much of a struggle at this point, but the closest the wedding becomes I believe the hardest it will be: neither me or FH are from the city we plan on getting married in (Baltimore, MD). I'm from Delmar, DE and he works in Vancouver, Canada. We chose Baltimore because it's the best in-between spot for him and his friends/family to arrive from out-of-country and for my family to drive to, at least as far as we know!

Our plans are modest with maybe 25-35 people total and a Millennial-friendly budget, but the problem is that since we're both at an inconvenient distance from Baltimore there's no way for us to be constantly in touch with vendors, or research and visit venues, or have tastings and trials. He's visiting for a week now at the end of June and I dread having to spend too much of our time just crazily roaming Baltimore for places instead of spending time together.

Tl;dr: anyone have any suggestions to make our lives easier while researching and planning when we don't live in the city we're getting married at?

My fiance and I actually live near Baltimore, but we are getting married about 3-4 hours away in Scranton, PA. We choose that place for the same reason as you. For us, our venue we looked online and picked out 4-6 places to look at then went to tour them when we already had plans on going to visit his family. His family lives about 1.5 hours from the venue we picked so we just set some extra time aside. As for our photographer, I picked her because she did a friend's wedding and I loved her work. We met her to do.our engagement session, but otherwise all of our communication has been through telephone calls and emails. As for the officiant, I found him online and I read a ton of reviews. We haven't met him, but we have been emailing and have had a few telephone calls. As for the D.J., I selected one from our venue's preferred vendor list. We actually met with him today, but we were previously communicating via telephone calls and emails. For our videographer, I did a ton of research and read views. We met with him yesterday, but have otherwise been communicating via email. He had us fill out a questionnaire which pretty much provided all the information he needs. Our vendors have been really great with working with us.

I think hiring a planner from the area would be worth strongly considering, especially since it's a destination wedding!

I live in Tennessee but will be getting married in Alabama about an hour & a half from where we live. I’ve booked all our vendors and found them all through WW or Google. Before booking, I checked a ton of reviews and looked on their social media sites to see their work and more reviews.
