This question is nearly impossible to answer. It depends on where you live, what type of food, what's included with the catering services, what day of week and time of year, etc. You need to determine not what is reasonable in general, but what is reasonable in regards to your budget. Does it work within that budget? Is it what you're looking for? Do they have a good reputation?

Answers can be all over the place. We paid $175 per person, to our venue, a 5 star, historic hotel. I'm of the "you get what you pay for philosophy." We had 5 hours of top-shelf open bar, a sumptuous cocktail hour food display, dessert bar, cake, 4 plated courses, valet parking, wine service; the whole 9 yards.

See we are trying to keep it low-key we were going to do finger food for our 2pm wedding but it would be just as expensive and more stressful to do that. My mom has a work friend who does like bbq and it is always delicous anytime we get any thing from him even turkey on thanks giving and the quote he has given us is $ 6 dollars per head and with our small guest list just wanted to know if that is reasonable

It really depends on what you can afford. I am paying about 19 dollars a person and kids are 3 dollars or half price. Now this is for a buffet and two entree chocies with sides and a salad. There is a formula you can use to figure out what you can afford for a carterer as well.

So what are you asking? That's cheaper than most fast food, how much cheaper are you looking for? I don't understand.

That's extremely cheap. I'd question it to be honest. Is that what he typically charges? If he's not giving you a deal I wonder how he's getting food for that price.

I'd shop around a bit and compare both quality and price.

ETA: Are you asking this because you think you can find cheaper? Because any cheaper and it would be free.

It depends on a lot. We're in NC. We are paying $30 per plate plus a $1500 service fee, plus tax, plus gratuity. It's for 150 people and includes beef brisket, chicken piccata, goat cheese mashed potatoes, Parmesan broccoli, collared greens, and bread, plus non-alcoholic drinks. That is not including our alcohol or rentals for place settings.

If it's any cheaper than $15, I'd run for the hills. If you can spend more at a fast food joint- no.

As for me, we're spending 10.5K on food and drink at our venue for 158 people. This breaks down to $66 pp. We're having 3 passed hors d'oeuvres, a salad and bread course, plated entrees chosen upon RSVP (pork loin, stuffed chicken breast, beef strip, or veggie with veggies and potatoes,) and a late night snack (assorted pizza). Our bar will offer budlight, oberon, various wine, vodka, rum, gin, and whiskey. And, non-alcoholic options, obviously.

Our meal is $9 per plate and we are having fajitas. The person who is catering does great food, they are super popular in our town and he knows my parents so he is also giving us a deal. Plus another person I know used them as a caterer and they were delicious. The prices just depend on the caterer, location, time of the year, how many people.

I am paying about $83.00/pp which includes service fee and tax. This is after a $10.00 pp discount for being off season. We are having 4 passed apps, 2 stationery apps, plated salad, 2 carving stations, 2 buffet stations, 2 veggies, mashed potato bar, ice cream sundae bar, coffee bar, and cake. This also includes a top shelf bar.

Anything under $15.00 pp scares me, but I am from NJ. Everything is expensive in the Northeast.

Is that the price for just food? If so, you need to factor in tables, linens, silverware, plates, servers, etc. You need more information in order to properly compare.
