reading vows from phone?

Julia, on June 5, 2014 at 9:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

My fiancé wants to read his vows from his iPhone. That makes me so annoyed. He was on his phone texting/ messaging with his friends throughout our engagement dinner. I would have said something if I'd known he was going to propose!

Should I let him read from his phone or veto the idea? FYI he didn't ask, he said, "you know I'm going to read my vows from my phone, right?" (It was also the first time he'd mentioned writing our own vows.

I've had several brides/grooms do this. Guests think, usually, that it's funny and represents the person's personality, but if you don't like it, then he should respect your wishes.

Maybe if both of you do it from your phone and everyone knows that you guys are phone people, maybe. but i HAAAAAATE when FH is constantly on his phone, so there is no way in hell i would allow this!!!

I would also hate this. But I could totally see my FH doing it also, and it would fit his personality. At least if it's on his phone he won't lose them!

I think too many people would find it tacky. I don't get being 'phone' people. Everyone has cell phones, and including them in every moment is silly to me.

Okay, let me read my vows from my phone...but first....let me take a selfie!

Nooooo. The moment is about you two!! Not looking at his stupid phone (I may have issues with FH and his phone obsession......so kinda biased here). I know, what's the difference between reading from paper and reading from a phone? I think from paper is more heartfelt. It could be the exact same words....that's just me

Celia Thanks for the perspective!!! I think that's how my fiancé is thinking about it, but I still do not want that.

I print the couples vows onto pretty paper to hand to them at the appropriate point in the ceremony -- no worries about them forgetting to bring the vows with them.

Nancy-- that is the nicest thing!!

I don't see any problem with him reading them, but I would definitely make him read from a paper or card instead of his phone. Honestly, I think he'll look like an asshole reading from his phone, and it will SERIOUSLY date your photos. . . .

*looks ashamed* I would be the type of person to do this. But I swear I'm not going to. ;-)

I have actually seen this done on Four Weddings and, I dunno, it didn't seem so different from reading vows from paper. *shrug* I mean, as long as they're written down SOMEWHERE, does it matter whether it's a piece of paper, a stone tablet, or a smartphone?

With that said, if YOU don't want your FH to do that, then he should respect that. He can live without his phone for 30 minutes. Maybe. ;-)

It would not bother me one bit if my FH reads his vows from his phone. At least he wrote them.....

No way. My MOH was going to read her speech from her phone and I nicely asked her to put it on paper. She was fine with it. DH joked he was going to read from his phone, I said no way!! It looks terrible. Plus I wanted to be able to keep the hand written vows and be able to read them whenever I want

Ugh, I'm personally not a fan of this at all, but we also don't look at our phones during meals or when we have 'us' time, so that might be why. Also, technology changes so quickly. It would be funny to look at wedding photos and see someone holding a big crater of a cell phone, like the ones 15 years ago. Fast forward another 15 years and this is what our current phones could look like.

I would side eye the crap out of that and question their common sense! You seriously can't get through your wedding without getting your vows off the phone? Nope, no way.

It's called PAPER. He can print out whatever it is he'd want to read from and use a piece of paper like a normal person. If I saw someone doing that at their wedding, I'd be so disappointed.
