Prewedding Dress Storage???

z&k, on March 11, 2010 at 12:18 PM Posted in Planning 1 21

How is everyone storing their dress looooong before the wedding? I have mine in a cloth garment bag, white tissue paper inside the bag over it & laying under my bed.I know I will need to steam press it though.I've heard NOT to store it on a hanger/hang it upright, because the weight of the dress might stretch it out of shape. Then I heard another bride say places like David's have theirs on hangers for months, without being stretched out of shape. How are you storing your dress before the big day....just curious?

I live my FH so I have it hanging on the hanger (from DB) in a bag in the BACK of the closet. (and told him if he needed ANYTHING out of the closet I'd get it for him) I also have all my already bought accessories (slip, necklace, shoes, bra) in DB/Payless/Victoria's Secret bags and have the handles looped over the top of the hanger so it's all together because I'm famous for losing the simplest of things.

Mine will be going to the future in laws' house. FH and I live together & my mom smokes, so both places are a no go.

Right now mine is being altered... But it'll be hanging on the hanger in a bag from DB and a spare closet when it gets back.

I'm bummed that I have to wait a month

I have mine in a plastic bag and then in the garmet bag purchased at DB, hanging on the front of my closet.I hadn't thought about laying it down though vs hanging up.

My dress was very bottom heavy, and I stored it hanging for a long time, as it came in early. I just used the little ribbon loops, instead of the straps. Just make sure it is well covered.

Since my fiance and I live together (and he doesn't want to know anything about what it looks like until the wedding day), I'm keeping it at my sister-in-law's house. She and her husband have been great about hiding it if my fiance goes over there. I don't even want him to see the garment bag or hear what it sounds like when it rustles, since there is beading on it.

I wish I had somewhere else to store mine! Haha. (Kinda) I enjoy slipping it on while he's at work and trying different hair styles and jewelry and whatnot with it. Haha. But, all my family is in ME (6 hour drive) and its us that are the out of towners. Haha.

I bought my dress from David's last may and its been hanging up in a closet at my mom's house, where FH doesnt ever roam. I bought the white garment bag from them and they just suggested I leave it a little unzipped at the bottom so it could get air and I havent had any problems with stretching discoloration or anything like that. It still looks the same as the day I brought it from the store. And its on the same hanger that they gave it to me on.

If you are storing a dress for a long time, you should put it in an unzipped breathable bag or cover with cotton sheet. I have always heard storing in plastic bags for long time has a tendency to discolor dress. I was told to lay dress flat, but unfortunately I have no place to lay it down, so hanging it in the closet will have to do.

My dress is going to be hanging in the second bedroom... which means (since that is my fh's music room he WILL see it... oh well I am going to just leave it on the hanger... the big issue is getting it back to MO ... I think I will have to get it steamed or something to get any wrinkles out.

My dress is also at the shop and needs to be altered too. It's pretty heavy, I'm thinking about leaving it at the shop until a few days before the wedding. They are super nice there and I don't think it'd be a problem at all. That way, if something happens, it's their fault not mine! lol

My dress is also still at the bridal shop for alterations. After my final fitting, my dress will be steamed and pressed and ready to be picked up a few days before the wedding.

I don't have mine yet but it will probably be stored in some sort of bag and left at my parents house. I don't want FH to see it so this is my only option.

Due to circumstances, fh has already seen me in it, was told by bridal shop to take out of bag immidietly, but no anything about laying flat. Have it hanging on hanger in wall at moment as that is only way I could store it without bottom touching floor. Will be wrapping in a white sheet though

Currently it's at my friend's house (I hope to ask her to be my MOH).

FMIL volunteered to take it, but the dress needs alterations first. I do think I'll take FMIL up on her offer, though, she seemed eager and they live blocks from the church... (no idea where I'm getting ready, yet, though). FILs live in NYC, and that's likely where everything is going to be, so I think it'll make more sense to have it accessible at their place.
