Postponed 2020 Wedding, Sick Dad

Katie, on July 31, 2020 at 8:45 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 6
I am writing this post to see if anyone is in a similar situation as me. Our wedding was supposed to be in December of this year but we decided to postpone it for December of next year and have a small ceremony this year instead because of COVID. To make this even more fun my dad also got diagnosed with brain cancer 7 months ago. It’s the kind of cancer where median survival is usually about a year. We got engaged August of last year and never could I imagine being in this situation while planning my wedding. I was already worried about my dad making it to my wedding in December and he is doing so well that I am confident he will yet now we have to postpone the wedding I have dreamed of for another year. I know other 2020 brides are feeling bummed too, but with my dad being sick it just feels like my wedding has been ripped away from me. When it comes to postponing it didn’t make sense to just postpone the wedding a few months because I don’t see this pandemic ending for awhile. So I essentially have to prepare myself that there is a potential my dad won’t make it to my big wedding and it’s absolutely heart breaking. I know our mini-ceremony this year can still be beautiful and wonderful, but I can’t help but feel depressed that I am having to make these decisions. It all feels so unfair. Any other brides out there having to postpone their weddings and have sick family members?

Postponing the wedding is already stressful enough, I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with the added layer of your dad being sick. My thoughts are with you ❤️

I'm really sorry that you are going through this, Katie. My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 skin cancer about a week after I got engaged. Unfortunately things spiraled really quickly and he died one month later.

My fiance and I just decided to postpone our wedding but we are eloping in a couple of weeks. I would give anything to have my dad at the elopement ceremony. Just make that small ceremony as special as you can, and take lots of pictures and videos. Make lots of memories. Not to downplay your dream wedding, but I imagine this year's ceremony is when you will actually be getting married-- this is when it will be really significant to have your dad there. Sorry this is all sounding very generic. I wish you the best and I hope that things work out.

I'm so sorry you're going through this right now Katie, I can't imagine how difficult it is!

I think your micro wedding will be more special than you think - that seems to be the overwhelming feedback I've seen so far from covid couples! There are some really inspiring weddings from other WeddingWire couples you can check out here: Last week's wedding photos, engagement pictures, and more!

I also just responded to this post from another bride who's juggling postponement decisions and family health issues, they may be helpful to connect with: i need to vent...

I am sorry to hear that. It’s very tough. My dad isn’t doing great so at this point I am unsure if he will make it to the small wedding or if we will have to move it up. It’s reassuring to know there are other brides dealing with personal losses. I was feeling so alone.
