pomanders vs. bouquets

Marla, on July 5, 2010 at 7:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Ok so the thought of doing pomander/kissing balls has popped into my head. FH says "whatever you want baby" (he's not really interested in the flowers) & my mom doesn't like them. All of the weddings we've been to this year or are going to (there are a lot) have done regular bouquets & I like being different, but I'm not sure which I am leaning more towards & just want other opinons. What do you guys think regular bouquets or kissing balls?

Pomanders can be heavy if done with fresh flowers. I like alternative bouquets instead... button flowers are really nice.

For my best friends wedding, she had a regular bouquet and we had the pomanders (bridesmaids). I think that mix was great. I think that as a bride the pomander would be more of a nuisance. Also, they are REALLY heavy as Brooklynne already mentioned.

I'm planning on using regular bouquets for my bridesmaids and I, but getting small flower balls for my flower girls. I think they'll enjoy having the long ribbon to twirl the flowers about more than having to carry a bouquet/petals (that they can't drop).

Brandy be careful.... unless you are giving them faux flower pomanders the more they twirl, the flowers will fall out and if they drop them the petals will bruise and turn brown. Depending on pictures, they could be a mess at the end of the ceremony when ou want some formal shots.

Thanks for the warning! Smiley smile I'm thinking more the balls too...cause one of my FG's is special needs, and will be pulled in a wagon (or something..haven't figured that out yet! Planned to ask WW about that one down the road)- anyways...she will not be able to hold anything- and I figured the ball would sit in her lap nicer than a bouquet. I hope to have both girls the same, so I'd want the other FG to have the ball too. She'll be 5 1/2, so I think she'll be careful- she's just going to be so excited about her princess dress, I doubt she'll even think about the flowers! Smiley smile

I officiated a wedding where the flower girl had a white roses (real) pomander. Before the processional even started, the weight of the ball caused one end of the ribbon to pull out. She dropped the ball several times as she was twirling it, dropped it as she walked down the aisle, and by then it was battered and bruised.

I was thinking of doing pomanders for my BM's as well. However, the flowers will be fake (as will mine because I'm broke lol) and hot glued into styrofoam balls if all turns out well. So they won't be as heavy and won't be so prone to falling off.

I was recently in a wedding where they had the FG carry a basket full of flowers (more of an arrangement in a basket than cut flowers in a basket) and by doing this, the flowers were somewhat protected. They held up for all the pictures and the FG thought they were pretty cool carrying the basket around all day.

I didn't really think about it being heavy or falling apart.....I'm using real flowers so I guess it would be best to do the bouquet. Thank you guys for your advice!!

I'm really not a fan of pomanders. My sister the event planner HATES them--says she thinks they look too artificial. I think they're in kind of a middle ground that I don't like much--I think button bouquets and stuff like that are a cool, unique thing; it's like pomanders are just a little too close to bouquets but not actually bouquets.

I like them for flower girls. I think adults look a lil awkward with them. But that's just my opinion.
