Plastic glasses at the reception! ~ VENT

Molly, on March 9, 2012 at 4:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

I just talked with the owner of my reception venue and she is just now telling me that there will be no glass outside in my reception tent! I'm spending thousands of dollars for a formal sit down dinner and my guests have to drink out of plastic! She says that they can't clean it up from the lawn if it breaks and that people will be barefoot. I'm SO upset! Has anyone heard of this happen before?! I'm going to cry....

I haven't heard of it before, but IMO it makes sense if you will all be barefoot. They are probably just trying to think of the safety of your guests.... And cover their own @$$ too I'm sure.

Molly....check your contract. See if it is mentioned in there. Did the venue provide pictures of what your tables would look like fully set? If so, bring this to their attention.

Also, I would suggest you contact the manager. This is totally unacceptable.

Yeah I would be upset to... I mean people love to hear the clink of the glasses as they toast each other.. not the dull clunk of plastic.

And I know this is hard because its not something that you wanted but I just got this picture in my head of this really elegant wedding reception and everyones drinking out of red solo cups..lol sorry

It may not be as bad. There are a lot of real looking plastic glasses that will look elegant and still go with their rules. Like these:

That sucks that you just found out now. Hopefully there is a way to get it straighten out or a nice alternative.

Why would people be barefoot unless the wedding is on the beach?

Also, how come it's coming up now?

. . . that is actually standard for outdoor venues. there are major liability issues for them on top of the clean up and everything else.

*BUT* this should have been fully explained to you during the contracting process - and if it was not, you may have a bit of leeway....

sorry you are having to deal with it!! good luck

As for the guests, i am sure they will be happy as long as they have cups to drink from, but i understand what you're saying.

I agree with Mrs Carole M. I would ask for them to point it out on the contract. Maybe you can get Venue Liability Insurance? If it's just not negotiable and it sounds like it's too late to change venues, That One Chick is right, there are some really nice acrylic versions out there. Also, I went to a Cirque Du Soleil show a while ago and they had these neat plastic flutes that were square, with a strawberry on the rim and everyone was commenting on how beautiful it looked. I know its not ideal and you dont get the clink, but you cant make yourself crazy! Pour yourself a GLASS of something strong and take deep breaths!

While there can be liability issues, seriously, I don't think Chelsea Clinton had plastic at her venue? lololol

In all honesty, if I were paying thousands for an elegant reception and I wasn't told about plastic glasses, I would be fuming. I drink my Coors Light out of the bottle so I don't always fit in with the elegant recption. However, Plastic or glass makes a huge difference when drinking a fine wine or a single malt Scotch.

Ah I don't know what to do. I've actually known the owner for a couple of years (it's a very small town) and I'm not sure what to do. I'm really upset about it but she's honestly a little wacky and I don't want to get on her bad side if I make a big deal about it.....it doesn't say anything in the contract. I just want GLASS!

If you want glass, go for glass. If they don't have it to provide, is it doable for you to rent it.

There is one venue in town that enforces the plastic glass rule. It is a pain, but it is also in the contract so brides know when they are signing. I would be upset too. It totally changes the look and feel of the reception, as well as adds to the overall cost as those nice plastic glasses are usually much more expensive than renting glassware. I would push back a bit if it is not stated in the contract. And honestly, I have never seen a glass shatter upon impact with lawn grass. Ever.

I actually have heard of this rule being enforced before. Many venues believe that glass outdoors is just asking for problems. I'm not sure what advice to give other than what's already been suggested. Look around though, you may just find some very elegant looking plastic (as elegant as plastic can look anyway)

I understand why you would be upset....but that being said, I was at a really formal wedding a couple years ago that had plastic everything - plates, cutlery, glasses, etc. I don't think anyone really noticed or if they did, didn't care! The only guests that will care about those kinds of things are people that shouldn't be there anyways Smiley smile So if it does end up being that way and there's nothing you can do about it, just move on and remember that it's a very small part of the wedding and defintiely not the most important!

This EXACT thing just happened to me!!!!! I just found out this week that my reception venue DOES NOT ALLOW ANY GLASS!! I signed the contract in September and they're just now telling me??! I reread every word in my contract and it says NOTHING about no glass.

It doesn't matter what the contract says, though, they can enforce their rules all they want. (I honestly cannot see a single glass breaking because we are renting those thick, commercial grade water goblets, champagne flutes, and wine glasses, AND we are going to be having a tent reception on the lush, green lawn.)

We went to talk with them about it and they aren't going to budge on their new rule but they will give us a full refund if we want. Looking for another reception location 4 months before our wedding......
