Place Card Etiquette.......

NowI'mMrs.B., on October 15, 2012 at 3:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Question about addressing place cards....does each person get an individual card? For example, if the couple is married, does the place card say "Mr. & Mrs. ________" or does each person get their own? What about 1 that you might not know their name - how do you handle that?

Each person gets their own card, so if someone has an open plus one you need to ask them who they're bringing.

Most of our guests wrote in the name of their plus one on the RSVP card or we knew who was coming with them, otherwise we asked.

Yes, each guest gets an escort card. The place card is what tells you which table to sit at, the escort card "escorts" each guest to their seat (tells you exactly where to sit at the table).

If you don't have a name, I personally wouldn't do them. OR you could just not do one for those people and if you have a DOC have their accompanying guest name with a "plus 1," i.e. George Johnson + 1. You should have at least one party member's name.

Yes, each guest can have their own seating card. If you do not know the name of the guest, simply put "Guest of ____" (the name of whoever they are coming with).

I too have only been to weddings where they did place cards with a couple getting 1 card.

I have seen it both ways actually. I always thought it was preference. I mean I prefer each person getting their own- mainly because that is the easiest way to tell the waiters who gets what entree also.

Thelma's Twin is actually backwards between the difference between place cards and escort cards.

Escort cards tell you which TABLE you will be sitting at. These are located usually on a table near the entrance of your reception room where guests can find their card with their name on it and then locate their tables. I've seen it both ways where you do one card per person or one per couple (or family).

Place cards tell you which seat (your "place" at the table). This is when you are assigning actual seats. Because of this, place cards are one per person.

Most people nowadays usually just assign tables and not seats, and use escort cards (or a large chart/list that is displayed instead of individual cards).

As far as plus ones, best case scenario is you find out their guest's name before the wedding, whether personally asking the guest or them including it on their RSVP card.

@Mrs. O - That's why I had assigned tables but not chairs - just so I wouldn't have to make all those placecards LOL! I also did not do escort cards but printed out a chart displayed on the guest book table to make it easy for everyone.

I only assigned tables but I personally still did one escort card per guest. We had a smallish wedding so it wasn't a huge deal. The design that I created and fell in love with fit better with just one name as well. The last 2 weddings I attended to had my and my DH on the same escort card though.

Ive seen it where it had the guest's name with a +1 next to it. In a sense, that person still for a place card, just not the correct name.

We are having only 54 people.. I knew everyone who was coming and they each have their own escort card to the Table - not specific seat.

Jahnia, they were completely DIY. I designed and printed them myself, and then used a decorative paper punch for the edges.
