Place Card etiquette

Bad Wolf .., on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hi girls! Just a quick one here. When addressing place cards for a married couple which is appropriate:

Mr. John Smith

Mrs. John Smith

(2 separate cards)

or

Mr. John Smith

Mrs. Mary Smith

(2 separate cards)

or

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

(1 place card)

or

Mr. & Mrs. John Smith

(1 place card)

I would prefer to have a card for each guest including married couples, but if that's not the way its done, I'll follow proper etiquette.

I prefer one card per person, because it makes it easier to find everyone. I went to a wedding where my H and I were put on one card before we were married (and we have different last names now, too) and I didn't know if I should look for his last name at the front or mine towards the middle.

I guess you mean "escort cards" (i.e., all of them are one table and guests use them to find where they are supposed to sit) and not true "place cards" (i.e., already at the exact seat where you want the guest to sit, and the guests have to go from table to table looking for their name). In which case, one per person seems like a waste of trees to me :/

Formal wedding: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

Informal wedding: Mary and John Smith (ladies first)

The only time I would say you definitely needed one per guest is if you are having pre-selected entrees, and the catering staff need a way to figure out who gets what.

Oh ok - yes escort cards then. We assigned tables, but not seats. So formal we would use the Mrs. John Smith format (or Mr. and Mrs. John Smith)

    Thanks much!

Yep, i'm with Barbara! I would prefer to save trees and do one per couple but we have different entree selections and the caterer is requiring us to somehow note on our escort cards which meal they are getting. One color for beef, one color for chicken!

IMO, each guest has their own escort card, with first and last name on it...that's how I'm doing mine. You can be as formal as you like though!

If you go with two names on one, if anyone has different last names, at least give them a heads up. It's annoying to stand in front of a table just looking for a name all over the place, LOL.

I plan on going with one card per person (recycled paper?) make it easy for everyone.

And I suppose I will go with option 2. The wedding may be formal but, hey, it's still Vegas.

I'm doing one for each individual person...I guess because that's just how I've always seen it haha (annnnd Reenski brings up a great point) and I like using Ms. Mary Smith instead of Mrs. John Smith...mainly because people may be looking for their first name/not necessarily last
