Photographer late on delivering photos

Brooke, on January 30, 2022 at 8:26 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 28
Hi-
So I need help on how to approach a situation with my wedding photographer. We got married 9/18/2021 & she told us 6-9 weeks for our photos to get back to us, the contract says 9 weeks. Her son went into the hospital in Oct & has asked for patience with her clients in getting photos back. COMPLETELY understandable & I have been patient & understanding of this. Her son is still in the hospital currently & I truly feel awful for their situation, HOWEVER, it has now been DOUBLE the time that she promised & there’s still no end in sight or date that I will receive my photos. She told me the photos were all done, she just hasn’t had good enough WiFi at the hospital to upload/send/whatever. but the thing is, they have a daughter at home who is the same age as the son (young pre-teens) so I know she’s at home at least half the time because she needs to be for her other daughter. So how do I politely go about getting my photos? My patience & understanding is about up

I would still try to have some patience. She may be at home for part of the time, but she might not be working as often as she was previously. And even the times she is working, she might have other photos/projects to get through first before yours. You could send her a message along the lines of, "We completely understand the delay in receiving our photos. Absolutely no rush, but we just wanted to check in and ask if you have an updated timeline of when we can receive them?"

I understand she has a family situation, but as a small business owner it's her responsibility to email all her clients and let them know why and how long their photos will be delayed. It wouldn't be out of line for you to ask one more time. Another option would be to ask if she can give you the photos unedited (since editing hundreds of photos is what takes so much time).

She said the photos are all done, she just can’t get them delivered or uploaded to a usb because the WiFi at the hospital is good enough. But I know she goes home to be with her other daughter while her husband stays at the hospital. I feel like it’s not unreasonable for me to want her to upload or deliver them when she’s at home. She told me almost 2 weeks ago that they were done & just needed uploaded to usb or delivered, but it still hasn’t been done. I’m trying to still be understanding, but the lack of a time or getting my photos back after so long is kind of running me low. I understand what they have going on, but he’s been in there for over 110 days, at some point you have to return to life, right?

My wedding was a month before her son went into the hospital, & she said my photos are done, just waiting to be uploaded to a usb but she needs better WiFi. The timeline was 6-9 weeks & it’s been 19 weeks. I gave her an extra 10 weeks past her latest deadline. At a certain point, you have to get back on with your life, esp when you are running a business & have clients waiting on product.

If it's been almost 2 weeks without her uploading them, and she says the photos are done, I would certainly reach out again to ask if she has an estimate on when those will be uploaded.

I agree. While I think it’s important to remain understanding of what has to be a horribly difficult situation for her, I don’t think it’d be unreasonable to politely reach out to her for a delivery date since they are already completed and just sitting there. I understand that her time at home with her daughter is likely extremely limited, but it only takes 10 minutes to send those photos. Also keep in mind though that perhaps she’s NOT spending half her time at home with her daughter. If she’s a full-time photographer it means she doesn’t have to go to an office to work certain hours per day, whereas her husband does have to report to work for certain hours. Since he is now the sole income provider, he may be staying at home with the daughter during the week while she stays with the son at the hospital.

My honest opinion, if your contract states a certain amount of time editing wise and it was not produced in that window of time some compensation should rendered. Yes it’s a sad situation that her child is in the hospital and you’ve been understanding to this point but she has a business with deadlines. Would she be this understanding if payment wasn’t rendered to her if you were in a emergency situation? You paid for a service so under the circumstances she should make arrangements to provide your photos especially if she’s stating they are done.

I completely agree. She did offer to give us a free album, but at this point, I don’t even want anything extra. I just want my photos. I’m going to message her again today but I’m just so unsure of how to approach the situation without seeming rude/ignorant.

Hopefully everything worked out, you have been beyond patient so at this point she should be professional enough to give you what you paid for or a date you can expect them. A legal contract is a contract no matter the situation and she signed just as well as you did so she still has obligations that need to be handled. A free album quite frankly is not enough to me personally it’s been weeks after the quoted timeline so some form of refund should be given as well since she breached the contract. Hope you get/got your pictures Smiley smile

I’m having the same issue with a different photographer! My wedding was 10/9/21 and our contract says 6-8 weeks for photos. I emailed checking on them in December and got no response. In January I got an email that said he had a head injury last year and was suffering seizures and the medication was as messing him up and he was forced to cancel all his 2022 weddings but this would give him a chance to catch up on his 2021 editing backlog and asked for patience. I’ve emailed and texted him a few times since asking for an update and gotten NO response. I don’t know what to do! All I’m asking for is an eta and maybe a couple preview shots and I’m getting zero response 😟

Most photographers take four to six weeks to share their photos, though some may take as little as two weeks and others as long as two months. Before hiring a photographer, make sure to read his or her contract, which should specify a time frame for when you can expect to receive your photos.

Oh no! I know exactly who you’re talking about!!! We used him May 2022 and we haven’t received our photos either and he’s not responding. He never mentioned the head injury to us, although I’ve read about it on his IG. He definitely didn’t cancel 2022 weddings! I wish he would just communicate and I should have hired someone else.

Did you ever get an update!?

Omg I can’t believe he’s still doing weddings! I just got my pictures in June 2022. Took us 8 months to get. Never got the album I paid for and I only got around 600 pics when the contract says I’d get over 800 in the package we picked. But still I was happy just to get something. He told us he canceled all his 2022 weddings because of his health! I wish there was a way to warn brides. I might start leaving bad reviews for him everywhere but want to try to get my album from him at least!

I know how you feel! I want to write a bad review but scared he’ll forever keep our pictures. I saw a Yelp review and her wedding was in April this year hasn’t gotten hers. Another client who’s wedding was August last year got some pictures last month.

Im glad you got your pictures. That’s so unfortunate about your album! I can’t believe he’s doing this to his clients.

I’m talking to another of his brides whose wedding was Oct 2021 and hasn’t gotten any pictures yet or any response to any of his emails. I think now that I at least have my pictures I’ll start leaving some bad reviews. I didn’t bother because I thought he wasn’t shooting anymore but now that I know he is I feel like I need to warn brides!

Ugh that’s so discouraging. I messaged one of his other brides last month. Her wedding was August 2021. He barely gave pictures to her last month and told her he had about 100 more to go and they’d be ready the following Friday. As far as I know she didn’t get the rest of them. Around the same time he told us 2 more weeks for us and he hasn’t responded since.
