@futuremrsprescott.. in CT a real shower is a "couples shower" or a "family shower" if men are invited and it's truly a shower, not a money making event. Hope that helps for ideas of what to call it! Kind of crazy though, I never realized Jack & Jills weren't a thing everywhere until this post. (Though I'm so glad they aren't!)

I live in New England too, and of all the weddings I've been invited to, only one had a Jack and Jill like everyone's describing...and it was awful lol. I always thought a Jack and Jill was just a shower where both men and women were invited, and then for this one the hostess was asking me to buy tickets. I was dumbfounded. It was for a really good friend of mine (she's one of my bridesmaids actually), otherwise I would have politely declined!

Reading this thread is like a window into some completely foreign culture... I've never heard of any of these things (Jack and Jill's and stag parties) and I've been in/to weddings around the US! It's so interesting how you can still be in a bubble with what's considered "usual" even though people move around a lot more and people are super connected via social media, etc. I agree with all of you that what seems to get lost on (some) people is that a wedding is a party that you're hosting with family and friends -- and yes, it's expensive -- but it's not a money making opportunity!! People need to learn how to defray costs the traditional way (host a smaller/simpler affair) and not expect guests to dig into their pockets! Anywho, Im sure I'm preaching to the choir here Smiley winking

Side note: my FH is German and they don't do showers or registries there at all. Basically everyone shows up to your wedding with an envelope of cash. They do hold bachelor/bachelorette parties though but that's just to have a fun night/weekend out with your friends.
