Super July 2017

People are ridiculous.

Sagan, on February 22, 2017 at 2:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 46

Just got reported in a Facebook group for responding to this with "Have the wedding you can afford and don't have a fundraiser to do it." I can't deal...

I've seen couples have a casino event, and the buy-in go to the couple.

I went back to take screen shots of the dart board thing someone made and either the thread was deleted or I got blocked :-|

Someone white knighted and said "it's not a fundraiser, it's just how she wants to do it." And i said "etiquette." To which the white knight responded "must not be that bad of etiquette if so many people do it."

    I literally can't. Is it 5:00 yet?

That's ridiculous. You're probably better off not being in that group.

Can't stand people like that... It really is a collection of people who prefer things handed to them, rather than work a little longer to save. Good on you OP, need more people like you!

50/50 raffles are usually used at fundraisers. You buy ticket(s), put it in the raffle, and the winner wins half of the raffle money, the other half goes to the fundraiser.

"Put simply, a Jack and Jill is a large fundraising fiesta for friends and family for which guests pay an upfront ticket price. "

    What in the actual fuck.

My understanding is that a Jack and Jill or Stag and Doe are wedding fundraising events that are open to the public. In fact, I remember one Canadian bride posting a picture of one of these events being advertised in the local paper. Apparently, anyone can come -- whether the couple know them or not. It's considered a night out (what the hosts serve is kind of up to them. From what I've read, it sounds like chips, pretzels...that kind of thing. Alcohol? I'm not sure if they serve it, and if they do, whether they charge for it). The "guests" (and I use that word lightly) pay an entrance fee and then enter a raffle for whatever big prize is being offered (some kind of tangible product, or a cash pot that's split between the winner and the couple). The couple gets all the money that's collected after the cost of the prize is covered. Of course, many of the guests are strangers to the couple, so they'll never get an invitation to the wedding. I had never heard of such a thing before I joined this site. Oh, and apparently, those who host these things aren't the least bit ashamed of what they're doing. They say it's "regional".

ETA: Sagan, thanks for taking one for the etiquette team. You keep spreading the word. If all of us do, maybe we can reach one bride at a time.

Definitely got deleted from the group. I went out with a bang, though: "I'm sure your gofundme page will give you the wedding you've always dreamed of."

I thought Hen/Stag parties were just European/Australian/maybe Canadian names for Bachelor/Bachelorette parties.

Agree with PPs though, this Jack and Jill thing sounds disgusting.

Hen party is what we call the bachelorette party in England. Yuck to the fundraising post. Awkward and awful.
