Outdoor Wedding?

Kate, on June 3, 2011 at 8:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

I am getting married at the end of next April (in Michigan) and would really like to get married outside. The issue I'm having is deciding on the feel for a wedding. I can't decide if I want it to be a huge party or a very simple, backyard wedding. Would anyone come to an outdoor wedding in April (provided we have a tent or shelter, of course)? I just don't want to do it the simple way and then have no one come because they think it is too cold, rainy, etc. Thoughts? We are on a fairly strict budget either way, but I just cannot decide what would be best. Thanks!

If you are on a budget I always like to think of it this way:

Would you rather feed caviar to 100 or saltines for 300?

I'm doing a beach wedding for 100. Our budget is 10000. We will come in just at it, just to give you an idea.

Hi Kate! I'm a MI bride as well. I've decided on June, but realize any day in our state is risky. We are doing a lakeside backyard wedding with a vintage carnival theme. I think we have to bite the bullet, knowing it's what we want and pray to the weather gods! We just met with our priest and he said something that solidified my plans: " the ones that truly love you, will be there no matter what". I say go for it! A party is a party, rain or shine Smiley smile

I am having my wedding in August in a local park. is there a local park that has a pavilion in case of inclement weather? people could come, the venue is free or nearly so (we have to pay $200.00) and you dont have to limit the guest list. Then you can have the reception there at the pavillion or choose another location.

I'm from MI, but now live in AZ. I would suggest against an outdoor MI in April unless you have a tent and heaters. You guys have had some really crazy weather this year. I'd be worried the temperature would be in the 40s at that time of year based on this year's weather patterns.

I live in Wisconsin, which has a similar climate to Michigan, and I think an outdoor wedding in April is a really bad idea.

It's likely to be both cold AND rainy, and even if it's only one or the other, it will still be unpleasant. A tent shelter really won't make up it. Honestly, it sometimes gets so cold in even southern Wisconsin up through May that I wouldn't schedule an outdoor event before June, and probably not after September.

...Actually, I was IN an outdoor wedding in northern MISSOURI in April several years ago, and even in the middle of the country the weather did not cooperate. We had to move it into a park shelter because it rained and was freezing, and even inside the shelter: still freezing. Don't risk it.
