Our Dog Sitter cancelled for the wedding day.

futuremrslavender, on May 26, 2016 at 8:07 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

Our friend's daughter was going to watch our 5 year old german shepherd on the day of the wedding, but i got a text from her yesterday telling me she probably wont be able to do it because her daughter has exams that week.

Our only option now is to bring her to the hotel and she'll stay with me there the night before to get used to the smells and stuff. we spoke to my parents and my dad said he would watch her in his room while I got ready and then when it's time to go he'll take her to my room,

I'm just worried she's going to get stressed out being in an unfamiliar place, but we don't have any other options. I don't want to put her in a kennel, I don't trust strangers with her there's so much animal abuse that goes on behind closed doors.

I'm sure it will be fine I'm just stressing because its so close to the wedding. ugh.

Even though you don't want to put her in a kennel, that might be the best course of action. It'll be a lot of added stress to be worrying about her during the wedding. Would she stay in the hotel room alone during the wedding? Is that even allowed?

Ask your vet for recommendations for quality kennels or even private pet sitting.

Honestly, I'd do a kennel thing; ask your vet or your groomer. We have several chains of doggie day care centers here that we recommend frequently.

    Where are you located?

Could you find a pet sitter? Like rover or dog vacay? We found one about 2 years ago, our dogs had so much fun with her, I contacted her for the wedding and she will be watching out dogs again. There are some where you bring them to their house, or they can stay in yours, or you can have some just stop in for walks and feedings.

We live in Ajax Ontario. I spoke to the hotel yesterday they are a pet friendly hotel, I told them her breed because some hotels will allow dogs only up to a certain weight but they said she could stay there. I guess I could talk to our vet I know they love her, she's super friendly and a giant suck it would break my heart to know she was kept in a cage all day.

I'm actually having this same situation.I'm not familiar with jersey so I don't know any good places. I also have a German shepherd and my fear is that he does not like strangers. I used to take him to a place in Miami which was his vet and he was fine but when he went to another vet and it was for surgery he stayed over night and I believe he was mistreated because he got very anxious and snippy it even took FH a few min to even get close because he was scared. Finally he relaxed enough to come sniff us and realized hey it's mom and dad and started to wag his tail and give kisses and acting like himself. So whatever you do just make sure it's a safe place.

They're a pet friendly hotel, but would she be alone there during the day? I can't imagine a hotel would love the idea of a dog barking all day, etc.

My daughter's doggie day care is a home environment with cameras...it's becoming more and more popular and your vet probably has a reference. Also try your local GSD club, they have a good network.

Dog Vacay is an awesome app.. I think they do background checks and you can meet them before you send your dog with them. It's just regular people wanting to dog sit but if you do your research you can find a good one. I was hesitant but I found a family and they are amazing. My dog loves them and they were so knowledgable and loving with lots of experience

Rover.com or DogVacay. I found my current dog sitter through a FB virtual garage sale page. DH and I set up a meeting with her, checked out her house and made sure our dog liked her/her kids, etc. It has been great so far and when we do leave our pup with her, she texts us pictures and keeps us up to date.

I love animal but they're no way in hell I would add that stress to the day. Find a boarding place that don't use kennels. A dog sitter in their home or something and even if it was a kennel - it's one day

Thanks everyone I'll take a look around, talk to my vet and at look into that app.

@ LindseyO The hotel is 100% pet friendly its a new hotel by the hilton called Home 2 Suites, they would call us if there was an issue like constant barking. She's not a yappy dog anyways so I'm not concerned about it whatsoever. She would most likely lay in the bed or sit on the couch and wait for us to come back. Our wedding is at 3:30 we'll be leaving the hotel at 2:45 the idea was a family member would go back to the hotel to check on her since our venue is 5 minutes away

Hire a professional. They have insurance and contracts and they take excellent care if animals.

Definitely not something to stress over.

Talk to your vet and see if they have any recommendations for pet sitters. Sometimes the vet techs even do pet sitting on the side - that's how my parents ended up with 2 great sitters for their 2 dogs.

It's good that you have the option of the pet-friendly hotel... but I would be hesitant to ask a wedding guest (family or not) to leave the party to go and check on her. Unless someone has volunteered to do so or someone has another reason they might need to step out for a bit halfway through, I would be cautious of imposing something like that on a guest.

I dislike traditional kennels for some dog breeds - I grew up with a German Shepherd and she never did that well in them because she's such a people dog and needed to be with someone to feel like she was doing her job. I would look at the websites PP suggested to see if you can find a house sitter or an in-home dog sitter. Doggy daycares sometimes have boarding available as well but they usually require an initial visit before they will let you board there (both for their protection and yours), so it may too short of a timetable to make that happen.

There are a lot of kennels now with web cameras so you can check on your fur baby and what not.

There are some excellent dog boarding places. I'm sure you could research and find a good option. Many have cameras if you're really concerned.

We are going away this weekend to do final wedding appointments and taking our dog to her "summer camp". It's a horse farm that has a section of the barn converted to dog rooms. She doesn't like other dogs but she's chill there. She absolutely loves it. The owner has three daughters that play with her and she gets to spend time outside, enjoying all the new sights and smells. She comes back so happy and mellow.

Not all boarding places are bad! I read an article recently in a dog journal that said a good boarding experience is actually like a vacation for dogs. Its totally true for our dog.

@ Caitlin I just moved to Burlington NJ and still not familiar on the whole south north central jersey thing ha I sound like a retard I should know where I am right?! We do have a friend that might come watch him but it's not 100% set in stone.I know FH brother after wedding will be back before us so he will definitely take over once he gets back but I'd like a back up plan just in case.

Do you have a trusted vet? They may offer boarding.

I get more stressed by the idea of leaving my dog with a pet sitter than I do at the kennels. We found one with cameras and 24/7 medical staff and it's so worth the peace of mind I get from that.

I think it would be fine to leave the dog home for the day. My dog is home all day without me there. Just have someone stop by to let the dog out and feed it. No big deal. We live right down the street from our venue. My fiancé will probably be there over night and will let the dogs out before he leaves. If no one is close enough then bring him to a dog daycare where they have open rooms. its just a day.

My FH and I are having a similar dilemma, not sure what to do with our dog because everyone we would put her with will be with us at the wedding. She has an extremely strong bladder though so we may have FMIL take her out late in the afternoon before coming to the venue so that she's only been cooped up for a couple of hours when they get home. I'd hate to board her and then leave for our honeymoon while family picks her up from the kennel because I'm afraid she will be reminded of her shelter days and think we aren't coming back. It's hard to leave your furbabies!!

Do you have a vet you can trust? I would talk to them. Many vets will board pets, or can recommend reputable kennels. We love our kennel. Its like a vacation for my pup.
