I remember looking at pics of my aunt's wedding cake from idk, early 90s late 80s that was similar to this, but had different cakes at different levels with dollhouse-like staircases between the levels. Bride and groom cake topper with little "dolls" for each of the BP on the stairs. I thought it was neat as a little girl but thinking back on it now it's kind of bizarre.

Hahah Yes these were all the rage! And yes, @pushingbuttons... The BEST ones had the stairs with the plastic bridal party! LOL

It might have been later than the early 90s. I don't really remember when my aunt got married but it was in the 90s, I just remember those pics of the cake.

I've always hated these cakes. Even when I was little. I hope they never come back.

A friend of mine from high school had the plastic bridal party and she was married in 2005. Granted she probably saw that when she was younger and wanted to replicate it.

They were starting to fade out (thank God!) when I married XH in 2003.

Yes @mrs.sitzman that's what it was like except it had dolls of the BP.

Did they want cakes to be like dollhouses? What?

As long as the cake tastes good (and I get a good-sized piece), I could care less what it looks like.

80's, 90's, and 00's wedding cake, decor, and attire are so ugly to me. But I'm sure people in 2040 will say the same thing about today's wedding trends.

I remember both of those monstrosities! My mom had some Wilton cake decorating books when I was a kid, and I loved looking at all the huge cakes like that in the wedding cakes section. My first wedding was in 1996, but we had a more modern style cake. It was just a simple 3-tier white-on-white cake (with raspberry filling) decorated with some fresh flowers.

I've already tried to think what will look out-of-date in 20 years' time. Ombre cake frosting? Naked cakes? High-lo dresses? Sleeveless dresses? It's kind of fun to think about my nieces looking at my wedding photos 15 years from now and saying "blegh what were you thinking?!" Haha! Smiley smile
