Ok freaking out. Scratched engagement ring!!!!

Chrissy4985, on May 14, 2015 at 10:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 44

Ladies, I am sooooooo upset. I don't know how I managed to scratch it, but u did. I scratched the solitaire diamond on my engagement ring. I only had it for a month. I can't believe I was this careless. I told my FI and he said don't worry about it, he will upgrade it, but I don't want an upgrade. I want this one. But the jeweler said they don't buff out the scratches, I can only get it steamed and she said if I went somewhere else, it would cost a lot and it's not worth it. Have any of you experienced this? I know it's a material item, but it's a symbol from my FI as well. Ugh!!!!!

Is there insurance or a warranty on it? Have you taken it to the jeweler to see if they can fix it! That's a bummer, but I think they'd probably be willing to fix it for you, since it's only been a month!!

I don't really know what steaming is but whatever happens to be required, will your insurance cover it?

I chipped my sapphire within the first month. Mine is barely visible, but I know its there!

I'd bring it to another reputable jewelers to see what they can do.

The steaming will only clean the ring and may make the scratch show more. I'm surprised it scratched at all since you can only scratch a diamond with a diamond. Have you had your ring tested and appraised by another jeweler (other than where it was purchased)? Hopefully you have insurance and they can have it adjusted.

Yea steaming just cleans it, according to the lady at the jewelry store, she said it will help with the appearance of the scratch, I guess she lied. I think I scratched it while cleaning my car out. I'm not really sure. I forget it's on and I do my normal duties with it on. I won't anymore

Oh no Smiley sad I freaked out when I broke mine, I was bawling everyone thought I was dying. It will be okay. Relax, have some wine, ask FH to rub your back/feet and don't worry about it until tomorrow. It is fixable, just keep repeating that when you want to freak out.

This is odd to me (and I sell diamonds for a living) did she steam it for you? I had a client last week who has a bracelet that looked like 2 diamonds shattered out when I looked at them with the loop. Turned out they were just extra dirty and needed a good cleaning.

I understand them not polishing it for you, it takes A LOT to polish a stone, it's really expensive, and you end up losing a lot of caret weight. However, I think it's mind blowing that it's an actual scratch. It takes A LOT to significantly damage a diamond, I've seen them have small abrasions, shattered insides, cut in half, etc but it takes a lot of wear and isn't something that would typically happen within a month even if you're wearing it for every day thing.

@Chrissy - I would have your ring tested asap. Diamonds only scratch by using other diamonds. I have been packing my apartment for a month and I haven't taken my ring off and I don't have scratches. I'm a little troubled that she told you that they can't fix it and is discouraging you from going elsewhere.

Do you have a homeowners insurance or renters insurance? Our renters insurance covers up to $2500 per jewelry item. I don't know if this would count, but it's worth a shot. A diamond can actually be scratched a lot easier than you'd expect. It's a mineral. I had a friend try to "prove" that diamonds can't be scratched and sure as shit, scratched the hell out of her e-ring with the serrated lid of a can.

No she didn't steam it @ heather a. She said the jeweler is not in until Saturday, so I have to come back. It looks like a scratch to me. I'm not sure if it's a abrasion or what but it looks like a scratch. She didn't confirm or deny it. I was so upset when she said it couldn't be polished and the jeweler was not in that I said thank you and left. I will ask the jeweler on Saturday.

I don't think you can scratch diamonds except with another diamond. It could be a series of small chips, as it is much easier to chip diamonds then scratch them. If it's actually a scratch though then I'd be worried it's not a real diamond. Definitely take it for a second opinion at a reputable jeweler.

No insurance ladies, stupid me, I actually have an appointment to get it appraised at the end of this month, with gem labs.

She shouldn't have needed a jeweler to steam a ring that's weird. Do me a favor, mix up some dish soap...like dawn...with some water, grab a toothbrush, give it a good scrubbing. Does it make it any better? You might just have something stuck to it that's making it look weird.

Like heather, I sell diamonds and am DCA certified, something isn't making sense, you can't scratch a diamond, you would know if you hit it hard enough, and it would in turn than be a small chip or abrasion, you would be able to feel a small indent when you run your finger nail on it. Steam cleaning could have been done.. It wouldn't damage anything. If the stone is truly chipped though, many jewelry companies have warranties that will replace the diamond as long as you've had it inspected every 6 months. Get a second opinion and try not to stress over it too much. Keep us updated

Your ring is really pretty! I tried to look for the scratch but couldn't see anything.
