Super April 2014

Of course I get road rash 5 months before our wedding!

Mrs. Grissett-Johnson, on November 29, 2013 at 10:46 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

So FH and I just got back from our 7 day Carnival cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. The trip was amazing up until I got hurt in Grand Cayman. A week ago during our bike, kayak and snorkel excursion I fell off my bike in a major way. Luckily I was wearing a helmet, but that didn't protect the rest of my uncovered body. As a result I have road rash on my right cheek, right shoulder, right hip, right knee/shin and ankle.

Most of the scabs have already fallen off with the exception of some of the deeper injuries on my knee. What's left over is a patch of pink skin which I've been applying vitamin E oil and Mederma religiously. Other than what I've already been doing is there any other way to help the healing process and reduce scaring?

SN: I'm concerned about pigmentation issues too.

Oh no, im so sorry to hear that! I dont have any specific advice, but maybe go to a dermatologist, and see if they can give you something a little stronger that vitamin E or mederma? Good luck!

I had an accident involving my face, an attempt to be an Olympic swimmer, and the side of my swimming pool when I was a kid and I was actually told by my doctor NOT to use Vitamin E oil because it can slow down the healing process by as much as 50%. Instead, he had me use olive oil.

He also told me to keep the damaged tissue out of the sun for extended periods of time and to gently massage the areas around the injury (as long as it doesn't hurt). Then there was the obvious like keeping the area around it clean and not picking at the scabs.

My accident was years ago and I never really had an issue with scarring. Hopefully the same will happen for you..thankfully you have 5 months to heal. Good luck!!

DH fell and scraped the freckles off his forearm. They haven't come back, so he has a freckle-free zone there now. He's a red-head with typical pale, freckled skin.

Definitely keep the areas out of the sun while they're healing because that can affect pigment.

Oh, didn't know about the vitamin E thing @K'lyssa.

Thanks for the "sun" advice ladies too. Since it's cold I'm not too worried about anything on my body, just the scare on my cheek. I'll definitely get some SPF since the Mederma I bought doesn't have it included.

I've used Bio-Oil for scars before and it seemed to work OK. A pharmacist recommended it to me for scarring. But I've read some reviews that it doesn't work for everyone... so it's probably one of those products you'd need to try to find out.

The dermatologist can recommend a cream that you can use for about two months to minimize discoloration. Its usually not covered by insurance $90 if you take the script to Walmart) because its considered cosmetic, but it does work in a short amount of time...I hope this helps...And if you don't want to go the dermatologist way....after healing you can purchase Clinique's Even Better Serum which has worked wonders for me....It's about $50 a bottle and it lasts for about 5-6 weeks...Definately works!

Two words.. Olive oil. The extra virgin cold pressed kind. My skin gets really dark in the summer(thanks to my dad's Italian side and moms Native American side) and I live on a sailboat and got hurt last summer. Lost 4 of 7 layers of skin. Olive oil worked better to prevent scars on my skin then anything did.

You're welcome! I hope it didn't hurt too badly and that you're healing up pretty quickly. Smiley smile

You ladies are too kind. I hate to seem superficial as if good skin is the only thing that matters on your wedding day, but it's still a bummer. Since it's only been 1 week so far I'll give it until the end of January (8 weeks) before I start dropping extra money on Dr. visits or Clinique.

Right now there's a lot of peeling and itching. That's gotta be good right?

Yes, the itching is good. It means it's healing. You could probably take some extra vitamins too that help with skin (Vit e, or biotin).

I am sure it will be all healed up by your wedding Smiley smile

Road rash usually does heal nicely, I think you have enough time before the wedding especially since you are using mederma and going to take some of the above advice. And yes if not better in 8 weeks I would go to a dermatologist. Good luck!!!

Did you ever heal? How long and what did you end up doing? Kids yet?
