NWR - Southern Sayings

aspiecat, on July 22, 2013 at 3:37 PM

I will be living in KY in less than two months and I already know there are plenty of sayings that are weird and wonderful in that area's culture. "Mad as a wet hen" is one I adore. What are others I should watch out for that are either your favourites, or might be deceiving in their interpretation?...

Over yonder and I reckon are also something us southern folks say. We hug to say hello and wave to strangers and friends alike. And contrary to what most northern people think... Not everyone is a redneck.

Texas born and raised and I'lll never say pee can. Smiley tongue Y'all, ain't, hon, sweetheart, darlin'.. especially if it comes from an older gentlemen. I've even been called baby.

Soda or Coke for all types of soda. Men are supposed to hold doors. Flashing lights when thanking someone while driving or waving.

"Messing with my ____ (kids, wife, famiily, fill in the blank) is like grabbin' a jaguar by the tail"

"Not smart enough to pour piss outta a boot."

"piss poor" well originally it meant your family was poor enough to sale their pee to the tannery. But my parents would use it like a piss poor attitude, or piss poor job.

I forgot about podunk...that's like super poor and they use dang A LOT...the main two things to get used to is how slow it is...stressed me out at first then it destressed me. Most people are generally super polite...its really nice. I loved it for the short time I was there (northern Florida) . Love being a yankee better though!

Can "bougie" be classified as southern slang? I haven't heard it anywhere but NOLA/BR/Houston. I used it in Shreveport and got the oddest looks. I love that word so much.

Ooooh and I love "podunk" @Jennifer! Smiley laugh I love being Southern!

you will be called sweetie, baby, babe, hun, ect... even by women it's just something to call someone when you speak to them, more than likely they call everyone one they talk to that.

I'll be there if God's willing and the creek don't rise. That is my favorite.

hose pipe is the watering pipe outside (some people in other areas call it different).

    coon is a racoon.

He don't know his [butt] from a hole in the ground.

    It's cold as a well digger's [butt].

Barking up the wrong tree. (you are wrong)

Go to bed with the chickens. (in bed early)

In high cotton. (rising up in society)

here is a site about "the slang"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_English

I thought the orgin was neat.

I'm from the Cincinnati area - which is just across the river from KY.

I definitely think it depends on what part you're in. I grew up with a lot of "ya'll" - and people here call soda "pop" - although, after living in NY for some years, I now call it soda and people look at me weird.

It's definitely cornhole, not bags (sorry Amy V).

If you're in KY, close enough to the Cincy area and someone asks if you want a "3 way" - it's not dirty, they're talking about Skyline Chili. lol.

Everyone around here also says "warsh" intead of "wash" - and the one that kills me most because FH also does this... "I seen..." instead of "I saw"

Thank you everyone for being my tutors in "Learn to Speak Souther, Y'all - 101". Very informative indeed! Funny, to boot.

We Kiwis have a few sayings as well:

Blow me down (when you are surprised by a fact)

Bob's yer uncle ("there you go - that's how it's done!")

Bugger (semi-rude term to use to someone being a drongo)

    Drongo (someone who's an idiot)

    Bugger off (go away)

    Collie wobbles (feeling of nervousness)

    Cods wollop (nonsense)

    Crook (ill, sick)

    Cuz (male or female cousin)

    Dairy (convenience store)

Get off the grass (you're kidding)

Kia ora mate (Hi, buddy, how're things?)

She'll be right (it'll all be okay)

Strewth (expletive, derived from "God's truth!")

    Sweet as (cool, awesome, excellent)

Rack off (another go away phrase)

Rattle ya dags (hurry up...you have to know sheep to understand "dags" hehe)

I dont know if its the same in KY, but down here in Texas you hear a lot of

    "fixin to"

    "Y'all"

"Aight" pronounced like "allright" without the L's and R, means all right

    "Icebox" means refrigerator

    "down in the holler"

    "over yonder"

"aint got a lick o' sense" - you have no common sense

"Aint" is used a lot down here

Most of the sayings and ways of life are picked up from living down here, and there are some that are just born in you. Im half yankee and half tex-ass so i know both worlds and i know they are vastly different.

My faves from when I lived in FL and GA

"hotter than a two di*k dog" (really hot)

"be like the old lady who fell outta the wagon" (you aren't involved so stay out of it)

"even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then" (everyone gets lucky)

"go off half-cocked" (don't have all the facts)

"go to bed with the chickens" (in bed early)

"gone back on your raisin" (denying your heritage)

"scarce as a hens teeth" (there isn't any)

The only one I can think of is what my FH says a lot "hotter than a hooker in church". I chuckle every time he says it.

Mrsaj2b, that saying reminds me of that country song "a little bout love", during the chorus when he says, "it gets hotter than a hoochie's coochie"
