NWR - Southern Sayings

I will be living in KY in less than two months and I already know there are plenty of sayings that are weird and wonderful in that area's culture. "Mad as a wet hen" is one I adore. What are others I should watch out for that are either your favourites, or might be deceiving in their interpretation?...

I am laughing so much at these - they are brilliant!

My son will no doubt pick some up. He already picked up "I know, right?" from my FH when we were visiting back in March LOL. It sounds so weird with DS's accent.

Bean bag toss is what we called it near Philly, but here in Sarasota I hear it called corn hole.

Yes, strangers will speak to you on the street. Took a little getting used to, but now I do it!

If I were any better, I'd be twins.

Waiting on Sue instead of waiting for Sue.

If you ask someone how they're doing, they'll probably say fair to middlin'. That means they're ok/good.

    Piddlin' means someone is underfoot

    Fiddlin' means tinkering with something

I'm from Oklahoma (we speak a whole 'nother english) and my mom's kin is from NC/WV/KY. Get used to cutting things, like lights, air conditioner, or water. You don't need to go for scissors, just shut it off. If someone offers you a glass of tea, don't be surprised if its got half apound of sugar. And if you like unsweet tea be sure and ask before ordering at a restaurant. Dadgumit is a close profanity, and when you hear something outrageous it's horsefeathers. I you ask someone how they're doing, they might reply "if I were any better I'd be twins".

@ Jennifer - my son's first visit to KY earlier this year meant he came across sweet iced tea - and he loved it! He also loved the waiting staff refilling the tumblers and his first meal out he put his hand over the top in momentary panic and said, "No thank you" as he found someone trying to pour something into his glass without his permission! LOL He soon got it that this is simply how it's done in most of the US - they refill your tumbler when it's looking too low, at no extra cost (he was also concerned it was going to cost more).

Getting away from sayings, but looking at more cultural differences, I will have to find places that serve poached eggs! I don't eat them fried or boiled, and only have them as an omelette when I make that at home. I like poached eggs but FH explained that's virtually unheard of, at least in their part of the "world".
