NWR - Southern Sayings

I will be living in KY in less than two months and I already know there are plenty of sayings that are weird and wonderful in that area's culture. "Mad as a wet hen" is one I adore. What are others I should watch out for that are either your favourites, or might be deceiving in their interpretation?...

Get used to hearing ma'am a lot. It doesn't mean you're old or look old. It's just a respect thing.

Also, I've lived in the South my whole life, and I don't say y'all, so don't feel obligated to do so :p

Oh, I meant to also add that "bless your heart" can also mean "that's a pity/unfortunate." Just wanted you to know, in case someone says that to you. It doesn't necessarily mean they think you're stupid lol.

I've never heard it called bags either, but that's a better name than cornhole.

"Bless your heart" is the definitive Southern saying, IMO.

And don't forget - over yonder and down yonder are valid directions.

In Atlanta, you'll eventually hear something along the lines of "turn right at the big chicken" when someone is giving you directions. They're not joking.

Since when is Illinois the south? And people have told me Maryland is a stretch...

Anyway, you'll hear "fixin' to" a lot, too. It means you're getting ready to do something. Fixin' to go to the store, etc. Every type of soda is called Coke.
