NWR: My dog ate a raisin!

Sarah195, on September 1, 2015 at 12:57 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 41

Long story short I work for my parents mechanical contracting company and I brought my dog to work today and my dad gave him a raisin thinking it was ok. Nope! They are toxic to dogs. I called the vet and they said to watch him to look for signs of toxic poisoning and call the poison control center if he starts throwing up or anything like that. Now I can't concentrate on work I'm so worried about my poor pup! Have any of your dogs eaten a grape or raisin and were fine?

My dog ate 3 grapes once and he is 100% fine. My grandfather also fed his dogs chocolate. It is just hard for them to digest. but one raisin will be fine. The most that will happen is loose stool cause their stomach cant digest it. No worries he's fine! Smiley smile

Yes. Before I learned that grapes and raisins were toxic for dogs, my dogs of all types and sizes ate quite a few of them with zero effects. They were ALL perfectly fine.

Some dogs are special haha we had a dog once that are a shit ton of chocolate and was fine. I heard that you have to feed the dog a lot of raisins or grapes for it to do anything though.

How big is he? My 7lb poodle ate a grape once and he was fine. Even the vet said one wouldn't hurt him. Unless your dog is super super small (and I consider mine to be quite small), I don't think one raisin is a big deal.

My dog ate an entire pound of chocolate and was fine. One raisin won't kill a dog. You're fine!

How big is your dog? I think the size actually matters for stuff like this. I've never had a dog eat a raisin, but my german shepherd ate a TON of chocolate once (like an entire easter basket full) and was fine. And then I knew someone who had a chihuahua who ate a chocolate bar and died Smiley sad

Anyway, I hope your dog is ok <3

I feel much better thanks to your responses thank you so much! I was so worried.

@futuremrslav @VenetianBridehe is 7.5 pounds. The vet said that 2 grapes can sometimes make a big dog really sick and a small dog can sometimes eat 10 grapes and be totally fine. It all depends on the individual dog! I hope that my dog is going to be one of the lucky ones.

My brother's dog ate an entire bowl of raisin bran cereal and she's fine. I think your pup will be okay but I understand the worry I'm a dog mom myself.

My 7lb dog ate an ENTIRE package of oreos. He was sooo hyper. I called the vet and was freaking out, turns out Oreos aren't made with real chocolate or something so he was 100% fine

My dog ate chicken wings, bones and all...he had the runs the entire day. It was comical watching him run into the trees all day long. Your dog will be fine.

Our dog is about 55 lbs. I was giving him a bunch of yogurt covered raisins one day, not knowing that dogs couldn't eat those. He probably ate 15 or 20 before FH realized what I was doing and stopped me. Raleigh was completely fine though.

I think your dog will be just fine. My Jack Russell once ate a dozen chicken wing bones and was totally fine. After that I told FH to always throw away food when done and not leave it on the table!

Oh my God!!! This is my worst nightmare! I am so scared of my little 11lb baby eating a grape or raisin because I heard they were so poisonous. Onions, too! One time, little Gerald did scarf down onions that fell on the floor and I panicked. I almost took him to the vet but FH told me to just keep a close eye and then if he started vomiting or acting funny, we'd take him. He was totally fine. Thank goodness. This thread makes me feel much better knowing that there are so many #grapesurvivors. Phewwwwww. I hope your pup is okay!

I had no idea that onions were poisonous until this thread good to know! Thank you for the well wishes everyone! I know it seems silly to worry about 1 raisin but the vet said that dogs all handle the toxins differently so 1 raisin could in fact harm a dog. They said they couldn't guarantee my dog would be ok. So far he seems fine and isn't showing any symptoms of being poisoned!

They don't really act like a poison if they don't eat a ton of them. They do cause liver problems over time though if they eat them frequently.

ETA: chocolate is a size thing. A close friend of mine had a nephew leave a pretty big chocolate bar on the couch and his chihuahua ate it all. The chi chi didn't make it.

My dog has gotten into everything you can imagine food wise, and he is fine. Never has eating a super large quantity of any of it, but I can't imagine one raisin being an issue Smiley smile

I had a friends lab eat an entire box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts and she was ok. I would think fluids would be a good thing to encourage. My pup loves broth-a-cubes. We freeze diluted broth/stock in ice cube trays for her and she thinks she just won the lotto. Plus on hot days its double duty, cools her off and makes sure she stays hydrated. I have banned grapes from our house for this reason, unless of course they are in crushed alcoholic form. Smiley smile
