NWR: How far do you commute to work?

Right now I currently work in an office about 15 minutes from my apartment. It's okay. The pay is decent but I don't really enjoy it. I knew going into this job that it would be more of a stepping stone for me and not my final destination. A job that I really want opened up. It's what I want to do...

A job that I really want opened up. It's what I want to do (I'm in Marketing)....it's higher paying, in a bigger city, and much more room to grow career-wise. The catch is that the commute is 2 hours. Relocating isn't an option as FH and I just signed a 12-month lease with our new apartment just a few months ago. Plus FH is in the military so he has to stay close to the base.

Bleh. I just feel like the city that I live in, there is no room to grow. It's too small for the career I'm in. We're surrounded by big cities...but the commute is going to be at least 1.5-2 hours.

Just curious what you all commute and if you have any advice. Heavily considering applying to jobs in these cities.

My dad did a 1.5 hour commute for 10 years and he didn't seem to mind it much.

I think it just depends on your frame of mind and if you can look at the positive!

Some people like long car drives because it gives them time for themselves, to think, meditate, or just listen to music or audio books!

I considered a commute like that, but you really have to figure if your quality of life will be better to the point that it's worth losing that extra 4 hours a day you could spend doing things you enjoy/being with your FH. For me, half an hour even is hardly worth it. But if the pay is enough, it might be.

I commute an hour and 15 minutes each way. It's long but I don't mind it. It gives me my time so when I get home I'm ready to be a wife to my husband.

I'd go for it. I used to drive 1.5 hrs to work (at a hospital) & the only reason I applied/accepted a job 5 mins from home, was because FH couldn't find a job near there. I really don't enjoy the hospital I work at now, but am sucking it up for the time being. If I could go back, I would've never left that job Smiley sad

PP raise a good point that a driving commute (i.e., you are driving your own car the whole way) and a riding commute (e.g., train) are very different things. @OP, what type of commute would yours be?

I live 6 miles from work and it takes me 15 to get there. It's wonderful!

My old commute was 2 hours one way and it was rough for the first six months before I established a routine. It was worth it because I loved the job and it was good pay. You really have to evaluate if the good parts of the jobs will make up for the sucky commute

In another lifetime, I traveled to mid-town Manhattan (48th and Park, and 70th and First). I traveled there from the suburbs of NY and NJ, and whether it was by bus, train, or car...I needed a full 1.5 hours to get there (although mileage wise, it should have taken me 35 minutes...but NYC is NYC). And yes, I followed the money and the prestige. It's part of career building.

I drive an hour and 15 min to work, and around an hour and a half home. It is totally worth it though as it is for a job I'd wanted for a number of years prior to getting it.

It takes me about 15 minutes to get to work if I don't use the freeway. I used to commute 30 - 45 minutes to and from work every day when I lived in a different town (before FH and I moved in together). It wasn't too bad at first, but about 3 weeks in I began to dread the drive.

what made it worse and longer each time I made the drive was there wasn't really any other ways to get to work. I had to take the same drive and see the same stuff day in and day out.

Each way? Or round trip? Each way I consider it pretty nuts. I did 1.5 hours each way for 6 months and to say I was burned out by the end would be an understatement. If you're talking round trip I consider that pretty normal for a career growth job

About 30 min. That's door to door taking both bus and metro. My husband does 45-1hr each way. I couldn't do 2 hours each way. I'd be angry all the time spending that much time on commuting.

I travel about 20-25 minutes. I couldn't travel anymore than 1 hour at the most. FH travels about 45 minutes, and around 1 hour 15 minutes if there's snow/traffic and that's enough for him.

It may seem so great now, but eventually it will take a toll on you. That's a pretty long day between your commute there and back, plus a hard days work on top of it, which will become quite exhausting. Is there any other form of transportation you can use that may help your commute? I couldn't do a work week like this all of the time.

1/2 an hour usually but it depends where I'm working. I've had hour commutes and I've had 2+ hours. Doesn't bother me if it's short term.

The longest commute I've ever had was 45 minutes one-way (which turned into two hours one way when it snowed).

A lot of companies are shifting to a part-time work-from-home model. I'd say look into the job and see if they'd be willing to let you telecommute for part of the week.

Other things to think about when you're making this decision:

Added costs due to commute--for me, the commuter rail alone is approx. $150/wk, plus parking here can be up to $11/day, plus the subway. When I drove, parking in the city can be $20/day, getting a parking ticket occasionally is $55, plus about $12 in tolls every day and filling my gas tank every 3rd day. I'd have to make about $11k more to break even on salary, without earning anything for the extra time I'm losing.

Time costs--there are a whole bunch of studies on how the farther you commute the fewer social connections you have. Similarly, it's more time sitting and less time to do other things. I had to stop going to the gym and gained a bunch of weight over the 3 years of terrible commute.

I have a short commute, it's about 10 minutes by bus and a 5 minute walk, or 10-15 minute drive depending on traffic. The longest commute I had for work was 1 hour split between 2 buses and it was miserable. My brother started a new job that's an hour commute for him, and he likes the pay, but the commute is running him ragged already and he's not able to be as social or active as he's accustomed to.

My commute is ten minutes now, and I LOVE it. I used to commute 45 minutes in the morning and an hour in the evening. I hated having so much time taken up by driving, but it was doable. If your commute is two hours round trip, then I'd go for it. If it's each way, I don't think I could handle that.

I have an hour and 15 minutes basically, each way (sometimes less sometimes more). I take the train into the city from NJ though and that really makes a diffference. I would not spend that long commuting in a car but the train is ok because I can read/nap and go on WW the whole time! I'm in marketing too and even with added commuting expenses it still works out to be a better salary then I'd get in the burbs. It helps too that my FH works 5 minutes from home and does a lot of the grocery shopping/cleaning etc since he's home a lot more than me. I think it depends on the job, commute type, and amount of responsibilities you have at home but I find it to be worth it right now.
