NWR: How far do you commute to work?

mmbrake28, on July 4, 2017 at 6:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 98

Right now I currently work in an office about 15 minutes from my apartment. It's okay. The pay is decent but I don't really enjoy it. I knew going into this job that it would be more of a stepping stone for me and not my final destination.

A job that I really want opened up. It's what I want to do (I'm in Marketing)....it's higher paying, in a bigger city, and much more room to grow career-wise. The catch is that the commute is 2 hours. Relocating isn't an option as FH and I just signed a 12-month lease with our new apartment just a few months ago. Plus FH is in the military so he has to stay close to the base.

Bleh. I just feel like the city that I live in, there is no room to grow. It's too small for the career I'm in. We're surrounded by big cities...but the commute is going to be at least 1.5-2 hours.

Just curious what you all commute and if you have any advice. Heavily considering applying to jobs in these cities.

I have a 37 minute commute and that's long enough as it is for me. Ultimately only you can make the decision but that's a lot of added wear and tear on your car, oil changes, and lost time in your day.

Is there any way an equally great opportunity could pop up in your area?

Is that one way or total? I travel about an hour one way.

An hour is totally doable. But after a real long week, I know I wouldn't want it any longer.

I commute 40 minutes to 1 hour+ daily each way. I live in the Atlanta suburbs so that commute is common. I don't like it at all because it's actually my ride is a real crap shoot. However I like the space with my house that I have and the houses in Atlanta are expensive. We're building a house that will cut off some of my commute time but, by how much is anyone's guess. I work in finance so I have to work in the larger cities for the better pay.

I commute 2 hours each way, but I make my own schedule and only schedule myself 3-4 days a week. Is that an option for you? I try to make one of the days a weekend day as well, to cut down on dealing with traffic.

I used to do an hour commute, I really wasn't that bad and it was worth the pay.

I moved into the apartment next door to my job last September and it is the greatest thing ever though.

My commute is only 10 minutes so that doesn't help you.

But I'll say that if this is your dream job (or a way to get to it), I would jump on it. The commute would just be a means to an end until the end of the lease.

When I worked in fashion I worked in the Empire State Building. I could see it from my living room in NJ, but it could take more than an hour and a half to get there.....I never did anything in NYC; I just wanted to get home.

It's a lot of time, though if you can do it by train you can consider it time to read, chill, etc.

Would telecommuting be possible? A four day/longer hour week? Flex time so you could avoid any possible traffic?

That is a lot of time to spend on the road, though I know many people do it. I got through a year and that was it for me. My current commute is about four minutes when I'm not going to a venue....

When I started working for the company I work with now, I lived over an hour away. It took less than 6 months for me to put 10k miles on my brand new car and we broke down and moved. It was the best decision for us. We now do about 20 mins each, its great.

I am currently 10 minutes from my office (in suburbs) but getting ready to move back downtown where my commute will be an hour, best case, probably closer to 1.5. To me it's worth it because I love being in the city. FH knows this means we will spend less time together during the week (since I'll get home later and have to go to bed earlier) but is willing to try it for a year, and we can always move back or I can look for a city job if it doesn't work out.

I loved my commute (before FH moved here and we moved to the burbs) because it gave me time to decompress - by the time I got home, work was the last thing on my mind. Also time to "wake up" drinking caffeine on my way in. I'm going to live by the train station so I can take transit, and I think having options will make it easier.

For me the hardest part has been factoring in FH since I'm so used to making decisions on my own. He needs more attention/together time than I do. So I guess my biggest advice is to make sure that whatever you do, you and your SO are on the same page about it.

Mine is 30 min. I would either get a new job or get really into podcasts if I had a longer commute.

I have a 15 minute commute but DH has an hour commute on a good day. His current job is a stepping stone. After almost two years the commute is starting to be a bit much. When he took the job, there was a pay increase but by the time we figured in tolls, gas and parking (he is in the city so parking is $120 a month), he actually isn't making much more. He was able to go in an hour earlier and get out an hour earlier so he is home by 530ish most nights.

Mine will be about 15-20 minutes on the train or about the same driving. We will live less than 2 miles from my job in a few weeks!

My work commute now is about 15 minutes, which is amazing, but I grew up in the boonies, so even my summer jobs were typically 30-45 minutes one way. DH and I also made the decision not to live in Boston for my graduate program, so I spent a year commuting 1.5 hours each way on the train and then 2 more years commuting about 2 hours each way between driving to the train station, commuter rail and subway, or driving 50 miles one way in rush hour traffic. It totally sucked and I'm so excited to be done with the commute. I tried to schedule all my classes so I only had to go in 2-3 days a week, but that didn't always work out. If I had kept the commute and found a job in the city, I'd probably be making between 2 and 3 times what I make here, and the commute is still not worth it. Also, not sure where you are, but weather can also be an issue. It once took me 5 hours to get to school because the winter of **** was TERRIBLE.

I have about a half hour each way, but FH has 45 minutes in the morning and 1 hour-1 hour 15 minutes in the afternoon. Mine's not bad at all, but FH hates his afternoon commute. We're thinking about moving somewhere that will make each of our commutes about 30-40 minutes.

Not me, but a close friend of mine has and hour and a half commute to work now and in the past working for a different job.

While working her old job she would be constantly exhausted and had a really hard time getting up in the morning early enough to get to work. She eventually quit and found another job closer to home. At the second job, she was even more over worked and worn down than the first, but there weren't really any options in her field close to home.

Finally she decided that she had had enough, and ended up finding a job once again an hour and a half away. This time she doesn't mind her commute and is constantly volunteering to take on more. The difference is that she finds this position very fulfilling, and works with a great group of people who truly care about her and what they do.

I guess the moral of the story is, that if this job is something that you truly love and enjoy, the commute may very well be worth it for you!

25-30 minutes without traffic, but I live in a beach town so in the summer it can be over an hour. It sucks. At my old job, I used to commute 50 miles one way. I don't consider a long commute to be a deal breaker on its own. If it was an amazing opportunity and there was a chance I'd want to move where I worked I'd go for it.

I'm in Marketing too and as long as the company isn't very old school you may be able to telecommute some days.

I commute an hour each way, it's not that bad. In the morning I beat all the traffic and go to the gym. In the afternoon traffic stinks but I use the time to call my family and catch up

I am about 35 minutes door to door. I'm a 5 min walk to the subway and then my office is just off subway as well so it's pretty good.

We bought our home due to proximity to the subway since we both work downtown and I plan to be at my company until i retire and the fact that it's a great area and super close to highways for travel and visiting friends/relatives.
