NWR: How far do you commute to work?

Right now I currently work in an office about 15 minutes from my apartment. It's okay. The pay is decent but I don't really enjoy it. I knew going into this job that it would be more of a stepping stone for me and not my final destination. A job that I really want opened up. It's what I want to do...

A job that I really want opened up. It's what I want to do (I'm in Marketing)....it's higher paying, in a bigger city, and much more room to grow career-wise. The catch is that the commute is 2 hours. Relocating isn't an option as FH and I just signed a 12-month lease with our new apartment just a few months ago. Plus FH is in the military so he has to stay close to the base.

Bleh. I just feel like the city that I live in, there is no room to grow. It's too small for the career I'm in. We're surrounded by big cities...but the commute is going to be at least 1.5-2 hours.

Just curious what you all commute and if you have any advice. Heavily considering applying to jobs in these cities.

I would never even consider that long of a commute. Honestly anything over 30 minutes for me is aggravating. Think of all the time you will be completely wasting every single day of the week. You will put so many miles on your car, spend so much more in gas, and be much more susceptible to getting in an accident. No way Jose.

I commute about 45 minutes each way. May be more in afternoons with bad traffic.

However. When I interned. And volunteered I was commuting from north Jersey into manhattan, then I would take a subway to either The Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn. (So basically about 2-3 total commute.) this was working for free as an intern or volunteer at the zoos.

I did this in order to get where I wanted. All this to say. If this is your dream. And it's something that will help you. Take it ! Don't settle at a mediocre job just because of a commute. If you hate it you can always leave. But you'll regret not taking the opportunity.

The time is gonna pass anyway. Smiley winking

I used to drive a 3hr total commute, there and back. It was awful. I felt like I had no time to do anything. Now I'm less than 10 minutes away and I will never be more than 20 min. max if i can help it. I work at a hospital so it's also nice for if we need to go to the hospital for some reason we're not far.

I have a 35-45 minute commute one way and I LOVE it. It is my alone time, I sing and get organized in my head. I don't even notice the drive anymore - it is literally habit. There are times I wish I didn't have to drive so far but, I don't hate it at all. 2 hours might be pushing it though. I hate driving in general and pumping gas lol if I'm not driving to work, someone else is driving me around

6 miles to work but takes about 30 minutes. I live down south where no one can drive in the rain, so if it rains it can take 50 minutes to an hour to get home.

My parents commuted 40 and 60 minutes each way for 30+ years so they think my commute is nothing. It's all relative!

The last city I lived in, I did a 45 min commute each way. Now I do 20 min commute. I personally won't do more than 45 min and really would prefer to stay less than 30 min. With that said, my job requires a lot of studying and at home preparation and a decent number of 12 hour work days (still requiring studying after getting home) so doing longer than that in driving is just way too much for me. If your job will allow you to relax when you get home, I think that commute is more reasonable.

I live half a mile away and use a scooter/moped to get there. Saves gas and time but rainy days mean I have to bum a ride from a co-worker. bothers me since I don't want to burden anyone but they refuse to let me walk to work since it's a not a great area.

My commute is about 1.5 hours door to door. (50 min on train, 20 min on subway, travel to train station and office). I won't lie sometimes it's really tough, but for me it's worth it. I commute into NYC from CT. There was no room for me to grow in CT but we enjoy living in the suburbs, and FH works where we live. Again for me the sacrifice of my time is totally worth it because I LOVE my job. I work in sales for a tech startup. You'll never know unless you give it a chance!

My commute has just recently gone from 70 minutes each way to 20 minutes. I can tell you that the commuting takes so much of your time (obviously) but more than you realize. I was working 12 hour shifts for 4 days in a week though, in my case it made a 14 hour day. So you have to really decide if the bump in pay is worth the change in quality of life. My new position makes about the same as the last but I am not depleted by the end of the week.

I live in the Bay Area, and I know people who commute 2 hours each way. Some people at H's company do it bc they prefer to live out in the mountains or near the beach. Most of them avoid the traffic by working from 7-3 or something like that. It just depends on what will make you happy.

Right now I live about 10 miles from where I work, so on a good day it takes me 15 minutes to get to work but on a bad day about 25-30 minutes. FH works a little under 10 miles away(I don't know the exact distance but I know it's definitely under 10 miles but more than 5) and it takes him about 10-15 minutes good day or bad.

I commute 40 minutes on a good day...most of the time it's closer to an hour one way. I've had to commute 2 hours when it's bad weather and it was miserable. I would not do that on a daily basis.

I commute an hour each way and I love and hate it. I love the alone time, I listen to a bunch of audiobooks (I hate the radio with a passion).

What I hate is that it eats up my night at home. I'm away from the house 12 hours a day . When you do the math, I basically have 8 hours to sleep and that leaves 4 hours to cook eat relax and shower.

You have to figure out if it's worth your time as well as the money

If you have a lease, it might not be worth the mileage you would put on the car.
