NWR: How far do you commute to work?

Right now I currently work in an office about 15 minutes from my apartment. It's okay. The pay is decent but I don't really enjoy it. I knew going into this job that it would be more of a stepping stone for me and not my final destination. A job that I really want opened up. It's what I want to do...

A job that I really want opened up. It's what I want to do (I'm in Marketing)....it's higher paying, in a bigger city, and much more room to grow career-wise. The catch is that the commute is 2 hours. Relocating isn't an option as FH and I just signed a 12-month lease with our new apartment just a few months ago. Plus FH is in the military so he has to stay close to the base.

Bleh. I just feel like the city that I live in, there is no room to grow. It's too small for the career I'm in. We're surrounded by big cities...but the commute is going to be at least 1.5-2 hours.

Just curious what you all commute and if you have any advice. Heavily considering applying to jobs in these cities.

My FH and I have been long distance for years and two years ago moved an hour and a half from one another (he is also in the military so similar to your situation and stationed in a small town with no job opportunities for me). I live near my job and commute ten minutes, and he lives near his job. We commute the 1.5 on the weekends to one of our houses. Another couple where one is stationed at the small town base do the same thing. Is that an option for you?

An hour and ten minutes to work, an hour and a half home. But that's by bicycle, 12.5 miles each way.

10 minutes for me in the morning maybe 15 in the afternoon. It was a huge help in making my decision to change jobs. I used to have a 30 minute drive in the morning and up to an hour in the afternoon because of the horrible traffic

25 minutes each way and occasionally up to an hour if there is an accident on the highway or something. That's even too long for me, my next job I'll be looking for something closer

I personally hate commuting. I used to have a 45 min commute to work one way, 1 hour if there was traffic. I was miserable. I now work 10 mins from home and love it. If you think you can handle 4 hours a day commuting, all the more power to you! :-)

I've had long commutes most of my life and this last job is so close (10 min!). There was another job opportunity which was what I really wanted but truthfully quality of life really made me copse closer to home . I think you need to decide that for yourself. If you consider the long hours after being tired after work and what you like to do after hours. Good luck with your decision, choose what will make you happy. If you dread going to work it doesn't matter how close the job is.

10 minutes. I used to commute an hour to a job I hated it and it was hell. I would possibly consider doing it for a position I liked but anything past 45 minutes is ehh to me. Too spoiled at this point lol.

I work from home now but had a 2 hour commute for a previous position. They adjusted my hours to work only 6 hour days but even with that I couldn't handle it. I did it for 9 months and couldn't have lasted a day longer. I love driving too but it's just TOO much. I wouldn't do it unless you can move in the middle where your commute is an hour or so.

25-30 minutes. I wouldn't want to commute more than 40 minutes each way.

Depends when I leave my house, Atlanta traffic SUCKS! But I like about 20 miles from work, that could take about 30 minutes or 1.5+ hours depending on if I leave at 8am or 8:05am.

My old job was at the CDC in Downtown Atlanta. It took me easily 2 hours to get there from my house if I left during rush hour, so I would usually leave at the butt crack of dawn and/or telework as much as possible. Honestly the 2 hours in the car SO isn't worth it! There's better things to do like sleep, eat, play with puppies, etc.

I'm about 5 miles from work. I'm in PA so the winter can be tricky so I like being close to work. But I really hate my job. I have a lot of stomach issues so a long commute is not ideal.

I commute 2 hours a day total, sometimes longer if the train is delayed (which it usually is).

1.5 hours. it's hard and tiring but worth it to have a job I enjoy. Did I mention the stress? An 8 hour work day turns into 12! That means if you are working a 9-5 you will be gone from 7 am- 7 pm every day. The plus side, I listen to a lot of news and know my current events. The downside, sometimes it's hard to stay awake and focused on the road.

How about a job in marketing at a hospital, or a nearby plant?

My commute time is 20-30 min by public bus, and that time includes walking to/waiting at the bus stop. I can't deal with a total commute time of more than 30 minutes; I won't take a job that requires me to commute longer than that. Personal preference.

I commute over 160 miles per day (round trip). It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to drive to the train station (with no traffic) then a 25 minute train ride into the city. It takes about an hour and forty five minutes each way.

FWIW, I have my absolute DREAM job. I love my job. I knew where it was when I accepted it, and I don't regret it. The downsides for me are financial (gas, tolls, frequent oil change/wear and tear on my poor car) and time spent commuting. But I couldn't imagine having turned down my job; I've made huge strides, I love my work and my career has grown leaps and bounds.

In one year, I put 43k miles on my car.

I am basically out of the house from 530am until 6pm daily Monday through Friday. I'm currently on a summer schedule of four ten hour days Monday - Thursday, off Fridays.

You could try to work something like that out to save a day of commuting - maybe work from home for a day a week?

I don't have kids and FH works closer to home than I do. We hire a dog walker to handle the dogs during the day. It's not for everyone.

FWIW, I cannot imagine not having this job. I love it. I make the sacrifices, some days it really stinks, but it is what it is.

I have a 20 minutes commute, maybe 40 if traffic is heavy, but I carpool with my dad since we work for the same company, so that "catching up" time is totally well received

I drive 50 minutes to 1 hour each way, and up to 1.5 hours coming home in shore traffic. For me, it's totally worth it because I love the school where I work and wouldn't dream of not working there just because of the commute.

FH commutes about 2 hours each way. He doesn't mind the distance/time, it's really more sitting in traffic (the ride takes 45 with no traffic). There are definitely days where the traffic is even worse and he can definitely be grumpy, but in general, he doesn't mind the commute. Would it be better if his exact same job were right around the corner? Of course... but life doesn't always work out that way. Especially if it's only for a year until you can relocate- I say go for it. A year of long commutes is a small price to pay for an amazing job that could lead to future opportunities.
