NWR- Gender Reveal Parties or Sex Parties

Jaemi C. fka Jaemi S. :-), on March 29, 2010 at 12:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

So I heard on the radio this morning about Sex Parties or Gender Reveal Parties where expecting parent have friends and family over (those friends and family are expected to bring a gift) and at this party you reveal the gender of your baby. Some where saying it was tacky and just another way to ask for gifts. Some callers called in and said they had one because it was a 5th generation boy and they wanted to celebrate and required nothing other than dressing in the color you thought the sex was (pink for a girl/blue for a boy) the guest got gifts and they just had a nice little party with the oldest male in the family to celebrate the generations. Just wanted to know what you ladies thought. When it is your turn to have a gender reveal party will you? Or did you have one already and why?

Can't they just do this at a regular baby shower? To me it just sounds like another way to get more gifts. Also, you don't need to ask people to bring gifts to celebrate a 5th generation baby.

This in addition to a regular baby shower, or in place of?

If gifts weren't involved, but it was just another party, then that's kind of cute. There are too few reasons in life to celebrate.

If it's in addition to the shower, then yep a bit "gift grabby". Cute if combined with the shower though.

It would be cool as a game at the shower. Like, put on the invite, "wear the color of the sex you think it is". But in addition....? Nah.

Agree with all. If it's part of the regular shower, pretty cool. But in addition to? I probably wouldn't go.

In addition to a baby shower...I would never do that. It truly seems like another reason to get gifts

That is what I thought...but then I am also most likely one of the few who do not want to know the sex of the baby. So few surprises in life...

This definately isnt something ill be doing. I think a baby shower is enough. You get plenty of wonderful things at baby showers and then there is gifts when the baby is born and things I just think this is a bit gift grabby really.

I needed to know...there was a bet going about whether it was a boy or girl. Everyone thought it was a girl except me.

Personally I wouldn't do it. What we did was I didn't tell anyone my daughters name until the baby shower. It was so hard to not tell anyone. When I found out I was prego I wanted to know her sex. If we have a boy. I don't want to know the sex of the third child if we have one. Since there are not enough surprises in life. And I would have clothes for either gender lol.

@julybride...I have to say when I first heard it on the raido I was like WTF?? then I giggled...the guy in the car next to me must have thought I was a total nut bag!

Twins...no way. Triplets run in my family so my rule is- I am not going to find out unless it is more than one! My friends sister is having twins again and she is not finding out, but in her defense she did the first time and had one of each so this time around she is covered either way!

Wow, yeah when I saw the title that was not what I was thinking this topic was about. Anyways, I agree with the rest of you here This sounds like a cute game to add to the baby shower but not as an additional party. Besides, it's not like you need more than one baby shower to begin with. With my baby shower and all the ones I have ever been to, the mother will end up with tons of baby clothes in the newborn to 3 month size (more than the baby will ever wear) and a ton of blankets and stuffed animals. If you want to do this other party, I guess you could but it does seem "gift grabby" and well after a baby shower the only thing you will really need (that is if you get the important stuff like a crib and car seat) is diapers. I always tell everyone that the best possible gift you can get for somebody's baby shower is a large box of size 1 diapers (not newborn as they grow out of them in maybe 2 weeks).

Oh and when I was pregnant everyone just asked me the gender of my baby instead of waiting for some party. I wanted to know the gender as did FH, but we weren't in the mindset that we had to know. Our son though had different plans. When we went in for our ultrasound at 15 weeks (that's the one where you usually find out the sex) our son immediately decided to press his genitals up against the device the lab tech guy was using to take the ultrasound. The guy didn't even have a chance to ask us if he wanted to know the gender before the monitor was filled with a very clear shot of it.
