NWR Excuses to get out of work!

Snarky, on December 22, 2014 at 11:44 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

Anyone have any good ones? I would like to come in super late tomorrow (like 4 hours late - like a half day) because I have a job interview, but I can only think of:

-sick (out all day)

-car trouble (my boss has seen my car and knows it's only a few years old so is less likely to believe it)

-doc appt (used that last month)

Help! Otherwise I'll just have to call in sick and miss the whole day, blech.

**I'm just going to take a "sick day." Thanks, ladies!

You could use something related to your house. Like a pipe bursting or locking your keys inside?

Last week I told my boss I woke up with my nose gushing blood and I needed to clean everything up. Or you could go with a nail in your tire, your spare is flat, and the tow truck is taking you to whatever tire company you can think of at that time.

Do you have to give excuses? I just say "I'm coming in at noon," and leave it at that lol.

LOL @ the nose bleed. That wouldn't get me out of work for 4 hours - if it did that would have to be some waterfall. House related is a good idea! I could say my furnace stopped working and I have to wait for the repairman.

Personally, I'd do what Janeen said, lol.

How about the dentist? or taking a grandparent for a medical scan (like an MRI) lol.

    (To go to an interview)

I told my boss my neighbor called me about my dog barking non stop, who never barks. When I got home, I called and said a window was open, so we were waiting on the cops. Got the rest of the day off Smiley smile

And may I add, I NEVER do that kinda stuff!!! I'm so worried karma will get me.

Lies about such things get sticky. It's easier to just not give information away at all. Legally, they can't really ask you as long as you have the time to take off.

I think any excuse you can give will seem like a lie no matter what for a half day. You can say you left your lights on and your battery is dead and need AAA to jump it but I probably wouldn't say anything at all. I would just tell them an unexpected personal event happened and you will need a half day.

You have to give a specific reason to use sick time? That's weird.

Just say that you have an extended appointment and you'll be in at lunchtime. They can make the inference that it's medical if they want.

Can you just take the whole day? It my job I find it easier to take the whole day and be done with it. Pink eye is always a good excuse.

Yeah I like Janeen's idea, too. If they assume it's a medical appointment, that's on them.

I also manipulate my lunch and then show up late like, "... Oops?" when I had to get my new SS card.

I can understand why you're looking for a new job, if they make you give a specific reason for taking time off. I'm with Janeen, I rarely give much detail for time off requests.

Can you just call in sick the morning of? Just tell them, I'm not feeling well, I'll try to be in later...and then come in after lunch? I've done that before, woke up with a headache, took the morning off.
