NWR: Brazilian Wax!

Kim, on May 12, 2013 at 8:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

So I really want to get a Brazilian wax before my wedding/HM and I was hoping to get some advice from you ladies since I have never had one.

First, how far in advance should I get it? I know when I've had other areas waxed it can be sore for a while and I want to be pain free and not red on the wedding day.

Also, how bad will this actually hurt? I'm talking a top to bottom, front to back Brazilian here! LOL so should I down a few glasses of wine before or should I be fine without any pain killers?

It hurts like a mother! I got mine on Tuesday for our wedding yesterday. I am told it lasts a few weeks. They had a fan directed in me and that definitely helped. Be prepared to feel a little awkward and exposed. I was just sore that afternoon and a little the next day.

I would advise getting it about 3-4 days before...as you can be red and sore for a day or two! I say lol down a few glasses and carry a rehydrate pack with some wine! It hurts wont lie it HURTS but would I stop going...no. I go about every 3-4 months...and no you dont get used to the pain LOL. I have learned that you can rub orijel yes I know..odd but it semi helps as it is a topical numbing gel. Its totally worth the pain and it last 4-12 weeks (each person is different).

Go 2-3 days before since uve never gone before & if u get irritated u want a day for the skin to calm down. Don't use lotion that day before u go or any scented stuff after just incase it makes u break out. Don't go to the gym at least 24 hrs after bc the sweat & friction of running can make u break out too. None of this will def happen but they are possibilities u want to avoid for ur wedding. Exfoliate that morning and then not again until a day after. It will hurt and ull feel awkward but u get used to it & it's normal. Don't feel awkward checking urself out afterwards to make sure she removed everything. The last thing u want is to have to shave the next day to get spots u didn't realize were missed.

Totally unrelated to what you *really* wanted to know, but a funny fact I just recently learned-- braziilian waxes are leading to the extinction of genital crabs!

Yeah go 3-4 days before if you have never had one before. Drink water. Tea tree is good and don't use scented things on the area. using a scrub on it stops ingrowning hairs as well.

I don't think it hurts - I was the person who would yawn and laugh during it, but then I have a very high pain threshold and started having them at 16 (even the first time didn't hurt really) until my laser hair removal.

I got one once and don't think I ever would again Smiley sad it hurt so bad, I ha to let it grow out for 2 weeks to get it and there were some patches of hair... Lol.

I would advice doing it once or twice before the wedding to work out all the kinks, if time allows.

I've been doing it for so long I'm so used to it, i do my own i swear by sally hansen ouch relief, it got rhis small towellettes that have small amount if ludicaine, one to consider, don't do it before your period it will hurt. Exfoliate, exfoliate, before and after to reduce ingrown hair, take some ibuprofen if you are not allergic for pain, do it about 7-10 days before your wedding. Good luck!!!

I have been doing them for a long time too, so I am used to it as well. The first time is the worst, so be prepared. When my friends have had them done for their weddings, I always suggest that they get one a month before the wedding, so they know if they will have any reactions to the wax. Like everyone else I would suggest going 3-4 days before your wedding so that the swelling can go down. I also bring hard candy to suck on while my wax is being done, so I have something else to concentrate on.

I had never had a bikini wax until late last year since i started working at a skincare boutique. Let me tell you, i will NEVER forget my first time! Lol. It definitely hurts a lot especially your first time after shaving for so many years. You can definitely take pain killers if you have, i usually take about 2 advil an hour before i know im doing it but doesnt help that much more. I now do it every 3-4 weeks and the pain is still there but definitely does not hurt as much as the first few months because your hair is still thick. I also have an amazing product at work for ingrowns that works wonder so if you see something like that I would also purchase it. I would recommend since its your first time to probably go 3-4 days before as well. Also make sure that you go to someone who is very experienced and well known for their bikini waxes because I have heard horror stories at work!! My boss is very well known for her bikini waxes, so if you are in the NYC area let me know!

Thanks for posting this! I've been considering it since FH nixed the laser hair removal idea for before the wedding (and I completely understand, since it was going to be a bunch of money).

Ladies who have had it done, does your hair come back in thinner or thicker?

To be honest, I think mine comes back the same. However, unlike shaving, there's no irritation or that stubbly feel. Take a pain med before you go and if possible, a topical anesthetic. Still won't kill the pain, but it'll help a little.

I waxed for 5 yrs. yes it hurts and you do get used to it. The person doing the waxing does make a difference as well. You should do it a few days before but it really doesn't matter. I just had my first session of laser hair removal treatment 2 wks ago. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Took 10-15 mins whereas waxing takes and hr. it hurt like a son of a gun BUT as soon as she was done I was fine. 5 more sessions to go, but I already have results, I HIGHLY recommend it. I live in NY and my mom found this great place in Suffren, NY called Nu-Skin Laser Solutions that has amazing prices. She got me a gift certificate for Christmas. She paid $300 for 6 sessions. Regular price is $600. They always have great promotions.

I used to do PR for a spa, and we put together a bridal timeline. Their recommendation is NOT to do a wax down there for the first time right before your wedding. Start a few months out and get a couple of them over time. You'll have time to see how your skin reacts, because the last thing you want is to be sore or have ingrown hairs on your honeymoon.

Glad someone asked. I was curious also. My friend went and they put some type of numbing spray on her, but she said she still felt it. Go figure. lol

I had my legs and bikini line waxed last year before FH and I went on vacation. I went about 3 days before we left. It HURT. Big time. And it was awkward.

The problem I had was that the waxing did NOT get all the hair. I still had to shave every day of our vacation. The girl who did the waxing started off telling me that waxing would solve all my shaving problems... and then she couldn't get all the hairs and claimed that "Well, that happens sometimes too" and told me I'd need to come back in a few weeks time for a second round.

    Nope. I was done.

I had some bruising too. Smiley sad The hair grew back in the same too - same thickness and everything. It only lasted a few weeks.

I'm guessing that my experience was not as common. Most people I know get things waxed ALL the time and never had any sort of issues. lol

If they use hard wax it will hurt less. I've had soft was, sugaring wax, and hard wax - Hard wax is the best and least painful. Go 3-4 days ahead. Drink water and relax. It'll be over before you know it.

I get a sugaring done as opposed to a wax. Much healthier for you, because sugar has no bacteria in it and its less painful (if ripping out hair down there can be less painful . . . ) and it doesn't irritate the skin as much.

I second sugaring. Less chance for skin to be taken along with the hair. Also, ibuprofen not alcohol. Alcohol does something to the blood vessels that I can't recall right now, and can cause more pain and irritation.
