NWR: Allergic reaction to bath products

ShortStack, on September 9, 2016 at 4:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

I hate to post again today, but this is killing me. I'm having an allergic reaction to something I use in the shower. I move from product to product, because I start out with no issue then it suddenly most things start to make my palms and bottom of my feet itch like crazy! I am using Dove body wash and Aussie shampoo right now, but I've had to stop using multiple products before because the reaction was so bad. I can't go see someone right now, so does anyone have any recommendations of products I can look into that might cause me less of a reaction? I searched online and Aveeno was recommended, but I figured I'd try to get some feedback here as well. Anything that means I'm not running from the shower to slather my palms in lotion for some kind of relief would be great lol Thanks!

I think Aveeno would be a great place to start. I have super sensitive skin and have had success with their body wash (I also use their facial moisturizer daily). Try to go for fragrance free products to see if that helps.

ETA - Cetaphil is another one I hear good things about.

Aveeno body wash. I'm allergic to MOST lotions, body washes, and perfumes. I use the body wash and lotion.

I haven't had a shampoo bother me yet, but look for hypoallergenic shampoo's at the store. They should say it on the front. or ones without a lot of scents. I don't buy flowery or super strong smelling shampoos.

ETA: I did not start having skin allergies til after college. I just learned what I can and can't use after dealing with it for 2 years. I'm also allergic to softener and regular laundry detergent.. Sigh.. :/ Also... Get some allergy cream and when you start having a rash/reaction rub it on it. It will help tremendously!!

If you take baths at all... don't use bubble bath or bath bombs unless they are hypoallergenic... I used a bath bomb once not thinking and I broke out and itched everywhere!

I can ONLY use the Aveeno that is both fragrance and dye free. Same with laundry products. Shampoos are ok, as long as they don't have a strong fragrance (I do not tolerate floral scented anything.) Aveeno also makes a fragrance/dye free shaving cream that I use.

You should try an African Black Soap. They sell one at Target and Walmart, I think the brand is Shea Moisture. If you can get a raw one online, its even better. I have the same problem with bath products. I also use organic shampoo and conditioner. The kind I've been using is Avalon Organics Peppermint.

I actually had problems with Aveeno! I know alot of people use it but, I can't. Try for products that are free from SLS (Sodium Lauryl or Laureth Sulfate), Phthalates, and artificial colors and fragrance. African black soap is specifically made for people with skin sensitivities.

I second Shea moisture products. Target has a pretty decent selection of natural/ organic products. Acure is a great brand that is all natural and many of their products are also organic. They are very affordable especially for a brand that uses such clean and healthy ingredients.

What is it in the products that is causing the reaction??? Try to narrow that down.

After a year of trying to figure it out, I found that most lotions, body washes, shampoos, etc use cinnamal as an emulsifier. I have a severe cinnamon allergy and that was causing the itch. Now I avoid it. Even the hypoallergenic products use it so they didn't help me.

Also note that I'm having major appendage itching issues, especially at night. It turned out to be nerves. (21 days!)

I have servere skin reactions to soaps, metals and perfumes. The only products the dermatologist suggested was unscented dove and and ivory soap. As far as shampoo my reactions aren't in my head. However if you hands break out like me i would suggest dove shampoo and gloves. Also follow up with unscented or mild lotions. NO BATH AND BODY WORKS. Since I've started this I dont have as many skin rashes or dry spots like i used to. Good luck having allergies really suck.

My son has crazy reactions so I've switched all his bath products to LUSH. All natural/vegan friendly products. Price tag kills me, but I'll do it.

I had the same problem. For a long time, I couldn't figure out what was causing my allergic reactions. It turns out that I have a sulfa drug allergy and that some people with this allergy can't handle sulfate hygiene products. I use Ivory bar soap and the purple Pureology shampoo/conditioner. Recently, I tried dove......bad idea!! Broke out in hives!!

I was having an allergic reaction to something a while ago and I thought it was something in my showet, but it ended up being my dryer sheets. I started getting the unscented ones and now I'm fine. I would try to stick to products that don't have harsh smells or ingredients. Good luck!

I also recommend the Aveeno fragrance free....not that you have to be allergic to something in scented products, but it's probably better. I also developed moderate allergies later in life.

Aveeno is great and I also buy a lot of my face lotion/face wash from whole foods because they have a lot of hypoallergenic options! My skin is incredibly sensitive too.
