No wedding party at the altar?

Cuddlebug, on January 7, 2010 at 2:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Has anyone ever seen bridesmaids and groomsmen walk up to the altar, but then sit down during the ceremony? My fiancé wants it to be just us and the pastor up at the altar, but we still want to have a wedding party.

I think this is fairly common for catholic ceremonies. That's exactly what we did for ours. At the rehearsal our coordinator asked whether we wanted our wedding party to sit or stand, and one look at my girls in their heels and that was an easy choice!

I think that sitting or standing is perfectly acceptable. I have been a BM 3 times and stood every time, but I don't see a problem with the bridal party sitting during the ceremony--its all about what you and your FH want! =)

I think the bridal party sits down if it's going to be a long ceremony, at my sisters wedding we stood up, and all the weddings I've been to recently everyone was standing.

If you do that, they aren't really part of the wedding party. They're more like honored guests. So you shouldn't make them wear matching dresses or anything.

And what's the point of having a wedding party if they aren't going to stand with you?

They still do the procession and whatnot, pose for the picture... but their feet don't hurt after standing for the length of the ceremony!

@ HPFanatic I thought the same thing!

    .

My best friend had all the bridesmaids and groomsmen sit except the best man and maid of honor.

Its not uncommon, but why go through paying for all those bouquets & bouts if they are "standing up for you!"

Some ceremonies have them standing up through to the time of the homily starts & them they sit for the rest.

We're actually having them sit for a few reasons #1 it's OUR wedding and it's about US (our MOHs & Best Men - we have 2 of each) will be up there with us. #2 It makes for better pictures of us... the photographer will get pics of them coming down the aisle and while seated or even standing in the pews #3 standing in 3-4 inch heels for my girls is a bit much for an hour mass plus pics later and then the processional into the hall etc. #4 Did I mention that it's about US??? lol... I'm grateful that our friends and family have agreed to stand up with us, but they're doing it because they've been there for years at our sides supporting us, but our wedding is about us becoming one and starting our lives together, not about how one of the girls can't handle the heels and is fidgeting up at the altar to ease the pain as some of my guests will gladly point out.

We are getting married in July, and we aren't having a wedding party. I think it's totally fine. We're having a little flower girl and a little ringbearer. Then we'll have our best friends stand in as our witness'

If they can't stand in heels, I'm sure they'll choose low heels or flats. It depends on the length of the ceremony.

As yada said, very common in Catholic cermonies - usually only the BM & MOH stand on the altar with the couple.
