I'm really trying to stay on a budget and so one of the biggest expenses i can cut is food. So the reception is past dinner and i'm informing guests to eat since its such a small wedding but what if i want to have something else....like smores or decorate your own cupcake bar??? i don't know it...

I would love some ideas and feedback on if this is a good idea or what to do.

@Hayley, it looks good but you gotta feed your guests bottom line. It's great as a dessert option but we are talking about someone who wants smores and cupcakes as their main menu items.

    @ FutureMrs. Hodges cute pic!

I understand the wedding year is skewing the responses... but....

I think that 8 o'clock for a start time would be a good idea for an cocktail/dessert reception. Just make sure you put something on your invitations that eludes to the fact that you will not be providing a full meal.

You can put something on the reception cards/invitations that say something like this:

*Cocktail and Dessert Reception to follow

As for the food, you might want to add in a few non-sweet items just in case people aren't fans of sweets or have diabetes, special diets, etc. Maybe havie a hot chocolate bar (where the guests can customize their hot chocolate with whip cream, mint, syrups, etc.)

You can do all the desserts, but maybe you can have some cheese and crackers, veggie tray, mini sandwiches, etc.

Guests will move around and socialize a little more than the traditional sit down reception. Planning to have enough places for your guests to sit, high top tables as well as traditional round tables.

First off 2020 that's too soon to even plan your wedding. i agree with everybody post. it is way too soon wait til aleast 2019 to plan and it give you a chance to save money for food . but a reception without food is like ice cream without the cake.

I know that the general consensus on here is that this is a fake account- but it really isn't that uncommon for people to just have desert receptions.

Around here almost all receptions are open houses that are from about 7-9pm, and they just serve light deserts.

Like Hayley said, as long as it is known that dinner will not be served i think it's a little out there to completely say no food is bad. It may not be common where you live- but that doesn't make it a horrible idea.

Hence the- "i know that the general consensus on here is that this is a fake account"

I'm just saying- IF it was a real person, and IF they just made a mistake on their wedding year- that a desert reception isn't that bad/uncommon/rude.

I think you might end up with a lot of unhappy guests.. If you must cut down, why not have the wedding on a Sunday and do a brunch with finger food etc.? Or even a buffet.

I agree with Karyln above, they are spending money to give you gifts.. Although in giving a gift you shouldn't expect anything in return, it's the right thing to do in giving the poor guests something to nibble on. Take her advice and cater something from a restaurant that won't break your budget.

Another big factor is the amount of guests you will be having.. Can you tell us how many guests you plan to have at the wedding?

The wedding date is correct now, she probably just put the wrong date. I don't think it's nothing wrong with a cake and punch reception. My sis got married last year and did cake and punch then a after-party at a club for the late-night guest. Even though I wouldn't do it for my own, " To each is own".

Instead of cutting the food out completely, consider a light hor dourves reception .Go to your local grocery store or even Sam's or Costco and grab some party trays (fruit,Veggie, wings, sandwich) . I have done it before for other events and I only spent about $100.

    Happy Planning!
