New York Botanical Garden venue question

Christina, on November 25, 2019 at 11:06 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 3

Hi all,

I'm getting married at NYBG in May, and have a question for anyone else who's happened to get married there. Our contact has told us that tastings are $250 per person (meaning us) for the entree, and $70 for the cake, and that we can't do a rehearsal any time before our wedding, except a few hours before same-day. Has this been anyone else's experience? If so, that's fine, then I know it's just how they are. If not, any suggestions for how to push back? It seems ridiculous that on top of paying almost $400/plate for our dinner at our wedding, we need to pay to taste the food we want to serve, and that we can't do a rehearsal.

Thank you!

    Hey there, Christina.

I’m sorry to hear you’re frustrated by this.

Some venues require that some form of payment is made for a tasting, with others it’s complementary. It really does vary venue to venue.

Was the fact you had to pay for the tasting and could only do a rehearsal on the same-day discussed before you signed the contract? Were these stipulations included in the contract by the venue?

This community member Samantha is also having her wedding in the NYBG. Perhaps you could reach out to her directly and ask about her experience?

We asked about tastings before we signed our contract, and our consultant assured us we would have them. I believe I specifically asked about time frame and logistics for setting up tastings, as they use an in-house caterer, and our contact said, “we take care of that, you can set them up down the line, it’s no worry at all!” I asked if there was anything we needed to know, and she said no, it was all-inclusive. While she didn’t outright lie, and I didn’t outright ask about pricing, I do feel deceived.

The same goes for a rehearsal. We asked about access to the venue, and she said we could stop by prior to our wedding to have access to the space to get a feel for logistics and that they would organize it for us. We also ran into another couple getting married there who assured us of the same, and who were doing their walk-through about a week prior to their wedding. So I’m very frustrated, and don’t believe she is working with us in good faith. I’d be happy to reach out to Samantha and see if her experience tracks with ours. I’m leery of sending in our second deposit, given that it took 3+ months for them to cash our first $12000 check.

Do you have anyone in NY to help do the footwork for you?
