New here and desperately need bra/corset/bustier help

RosePi, on June 26, 2013 at 1:16 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I'm new here and my wedding is coming up in 5 weeks, eeks! August 4th is the date.

This is the wedding dress I purchased:

http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Pick-up-with-Illusion-Bodice-and-Lace-up-Back-PMK3441_Bridal-Gowns-Shop-By-Designer-Davids-Bridal-Collection-Luxe-by-Davids-Bridal

Our budget is small so this is a pretty big splurge for us in this area.

I went to David's Bridal to get alterations done on my wedding dress. At the end, the sticker shock was $411. WHAT??? SO, I'm going to ask my mom to do at least half of it with safety pins (she's a great seamstress but there is no time since she is coming from out of state and the same same look can be achieved with safety pins and they are hidden under the skirt). That would be to hem it and to also pin up the train after the ceremony so it's not dragging everywhere.

The other alterations were to nip in the waist which I definitely still want done, and to add in a panel in the back of which I'm not sure about.

David's Bridal advised that I wear this or one with boning under the dress since I needed my bust to look full and I wanted the classy white look rather than a see-through look for the dress (I'm a 34 B):

While it worked great in filling my bust out and making it actually look full, it didn't do anything for my waist at all (both with boning and without). It did not fit tightly or snugly around my waist. I could pinch and pull a little fabric away from my stomach and waist. Got some bunching and bumps in front and sides. Just lousy fit. I thought a corset is supposed help make the bust look fuller AND make the waist look smaller? It did only half the job. The bunching and bumps were not visible under the dress.

So, I'm wondering if I should even bother with the bustier at all or if I should try something else to accomplish the same look or better. (Continued in next post)

What I want is to fill my bust out (or else there is a gap between my bust and the dress) and make my waist look small like an hourglass. I am 5'7" and 116 hoping to gain weight. These below are some ideas I had in mind.

    Silicone bust inserts

    http://www.amazon.com/Adhesive-Silicone-Color-Backless-Strapless/dp/B006NTENI2/ref=sr_1_4?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1372250969&sr=1-4

OR, I can try this cleavage method with pantyhose or whatever to use as inserts

Then for the waist maybe I can use something like this one:

OR, I can get this one:

    http://www.target.com/p/merona-women-s-v-neck-lace-cami-assorted-colors/-/A-14007810#prodSlot=medium_1_21

Get the tightest/smallest one I can fit on me, cut it to follow the lines of the dress front and back and put on so that I will have white coverage under the sheer see-through part of the dress. If it is tight/small, it is more likely that when the laces are tightened, the fabric won't bunch up underneath. The shirt won't offer any shape or support but maybe the dress itself is sufficient to do that itself on it's own since it already has a little boning in it?

I'm just not sure which method will work the best.

My FI really thinks I should just get the bustier from David's Bridal and not try anything else since it did give me nice support on top even though it did nothing for my waist. (Continued for 1 last time.)

FI did not get to see the corset alone by itself on me. I did explain everything in detail to him about it.

Which option(s) do you gals think is the best? Thank you so much for enduring my 4 long posts and thank you so much in advance for your thoughtfulness in replying to my post!!! *Crossing fingers hoping for helpful responses*

I'll say first off, in the world of shapewear, I suggest trying it on vs just ordering and hoping for the best. Usually the shape you're seeing on the model is what she was born with - it's very difficult to create curves where they don't exist.

I would suggest possibly going to someone else to inquire about alterations. Does the dress have any boning? it looked like it from the picture but wasn't sure because of the shapewear they were recommending. If it does, being a lace up, the dress should naturally be able to be its own corset. Getting a good tight fit with the dress is going to help you all the way around - give you the waist and get the "girls" up which will help with the effect as well. Most girls seemed to have said that outside alteration people are cheaper than DB.

I'd also suggest stopping in Nordstrom and get some tips on the best corset/shapewear for the effect you want. Try some one, get an idea and then see if Nordstrom Rack has some there for cheaper.

Hmmm, thank you!!! My FI did think about perhaps looking outside of David's Bridal for alterations but for some reason the idea fell by the wayside and the store is holding the dress for us until we call back later with what we want done to it. I think I shall take it to someone else, thank you!!!

Yes, the dress does have boning. For some reason, it doesn't even cinch in the waist at all. The alterations lady nipped it in a little with pins which helped a bit, but not enough. It might be enough if I gain some weight though?

I think I might be doing the sports tape to create a cleavage. Having cleavage at least once in my lifetime for the wedding? Oh heck yes! The bustier created a cleavage but when I moved around, it disappeared so the tape should do it whether I wear that bustier or something else.

Thank you for the advice about Nordstrom, sounds pretty good. Any idea how much time alterations typically needs?

Make sure you look at reviews of alteration places that have done wedding dresses too! Altering pants is a lot different than a dress! The dress does have a corset, right? You might ask the alteration's person about getting a more hourglass look - depending on how much room you have in the dress and how you cinch it in, you can create curves, but you also might not be able to breathe.

I was told 4-6 weeks would be fine but I'm getting married in the off season. I've heard 6-8 weeks is usually good to start, that way if they need to do any last minute ones right before the wedding, you should still have some time.

JC Pennies has a lot of bustiers in stock. I'd suggest going there and shopping around, trying things on.

I agree with SXC, get some other estimates on the alterations. I felt like a number at David's. People everywhere looking at everything they are doing. Attendant is answering questions about other dresses while pinning someone's dress. So I went to a seamstress who works out of her home and am getting much more personalized attention. Better prices too.
