Need to quit my job

Susana A, on January 24, 2017 at 11:37 PM

We have a new manager now and today I let her know that less than 3 months it's going to be my wedding and I let her know that I will be going for a honeymoon for a week. Well she tells me that I have to cancel my wedding or leave the job, I'm in shock , I never thought anyone can respond like that....

We have a new manager now and today I let her know that less than 3 months it's going to be my wedding and I let her know that I will be going for a honeymoon for a week.

Well she tells me that I have to cancel my wedding or leave the job, I'm in shock , I never thought anyone can respond like that.

Should I tell her tomorrow that I'm going to leave the job ? Or should I just work until my wedding and then quit?

I'm lost and not sure what to think anymore.

If you're in an at will state, you might be screwed. Sounds like you need to take it higher up and look for a new job while you do so. Document everything.

To everyone saying she can't "legally do that," what law, exactly do you believe the manager is breaking?

She may or may not be breaking an employee contract or business policies, we don't know because OP has not said...but what law is it that you believe is being broken?

Do not quit! Especially if the PTO was already approved. Let them terminate you so you can file for unemployment while looking for another job.

Do you have an HR rep? I don't think she can do this... Go above her head.

Hate to say this but if you are in the states, a lot of states have a fire at will policy. Meaning unless you are union, they can fire you without any explanation. Now, if the company has a policy against this, then it needs to be taken to HR which it should be taken to HR anyways. This is complete BS but you may have just received a glimpse into your future. I would wait until the wedding to quit but I would start looking for a new job now. Unless you and FH can completely and confidently afford it, do not quit this job if you do not have another one in place. Policies may be being broken but no laws. In fact montana is the only state that has protection against this.

OP is getting married in Brooklyn. I assume she lives in New York, which is an At Will state. Talk to HR and start putting the feelers out there for a new job and start looking! Never leave a job until you have a job. Its harder to get one if you are unemployed.

I skimmed through the comments so I don't know if you said what type of job you have. You should take this to HR and start looking for new positions immediately (and discreetly). But don't quit!

    Document everything.

The OP has never said that the time off was approved by anyone. She said "everyone knows about my wedding". That is not the same thing as having written approval for time off by a manager. It seems strange that she won't clarify whether she has actual approval.

PP made good points. She can't force you to quit, she would have to fire you. You can't collect unemployment if you quit, only if you're fired or laid off, so if you still don't have a new job by the time your wedding comes, let her know you don't want to leave, so she will have to fire you.

    And document EVERYTHING!

Definitely talk to HR if that's possible, I didn't see you say what type of job you have and if there's an HR department

I would also closely look into your employee benefits. Some businesses offer marriage leave, that does not come out of your standard PTO. Mine offers up to three days.

In California and in other states it IS illegal to record someone without them knowing you are recording them. Please only record conversations IF you let her know you are doing so if you are in the state of California. Each state has their own laws pertaining to this issue.

This is unfortunate and I would be going right above her head to get it sorted out. Don't quit just yet, find another job first. Good luck!

You definitely need to find a new job first, most jobs will ask you when can you start, so I'd look for a job with a flexible start date so you can start after the honeymoon.

But if your current job is a good job that you'd like to stay at, I would do everything Richard said before you quit.

I keep coming back hoping to see from OP that she had the time off approved. Where are you, OP?

Damn I fell asleep, and now I'm at work , yes my manager before her approved that I can leave for my honeymoon, and I'm a medical assistant I work in a medical office.

I didn't expect so many people would comment, sorry I took so long to reply.

And I decided to work another two months and I will just leave this place, that's all
