Need to quit my job

Susana A, on January 24, 2017 at 11:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 75

We have a new manager now and today I let her know that less than 3 months it's going to be my wedding and I let her know that I will be going for a honeymoon for a week.

Well she tells me that I have to cancel my wedding or leave the job, I'm in shock , I never thought anyone can respond like that.

Should I tell her tomorrow that I'm going to leave the job ? Or should I just work until my wedding and then quit?

I'm lost and not sure what to think anymore.

    Why did she say that?

Have you already requested time off for the wedding? Or was this the first time you'd mentioned it to anyone?

Start looking for a new job and once you find one give your 2 weeks notice. That's very insensitive of her.

What is your company's policy of vacation/leave? when do you have to submit your requests? When in doubt follow the chain of command and talk with her boss and explain you have been planning this for months and previous manager was aware and approved to vacation time.

Everyone knows about my wedding, well since she is a new manager I had to let her know, but she said she can't let me go for a week, and if I leave for a week I can forget about my job .

Are you not able to use your vacation time or have someone cover for you?

That is crazy! Screw that place. But...try to find another job first before you quit. You don't want to be without an income. I think this is a blessing in desguise!

Start looking for a new job. I can't believe she would say something like that.

WHAAAAAT?!? Yikes, so sorry. Definitely don't quit right away-start looking asap, and just give 2 weeks as pp said. If you don't have something by the time your wedding comes around, go ahead and quit then. Is there anyone above her you can talk to in the meantime? So sorry you have to deal with this!

Definitely go through the chain of command. Half of the time managers don't even know what the company policy is. You may be able to find the answers to your questions in your employee handbook. If you don't have one you may request one from your HR dept.

I would call HR. Maybe there is note somewhere from previous manager?

NO...never leave a job unless you have something else secured. Do not quit tomorrow, but I would send out some feelers.

Do you have an HR department? If so, I'd be there tomorrow morning. If not, I'd consider going above her head and speaking with her supervisor IF you had this all taken care of before she showed up. No company is going to go under because one employee is out for a week. If you had pneumonia, would you lose your job? If you had an ectopic pregnancy that required a week of R and R, would you lose your job? You've planned a wedding, you made sure your scheduled your time off, and it's ridiculous to tell you to choose your wedding events or your job.

Just out of curiosity, how did you respond to this new manager's directive?

Is there a human resources rep that you can speak with?

I would tell her that your going to post pine your wedding and then look for another job, once you find another job then put in your 2 weeks. I would put in her head that you're postponing the wedding so she won't be shady with you until you leave. She sounds like she has a power trip! You'd be miserable staying there!! Quit!!!

WTF??? I agree with other posters about reading up on the policy and going to HR. What do you do for a living? That is flipping crazy. I was off for 2.5 weeks for mine. My immediate supervisor went to bat for me since I had minimal time off after using it all with my sick father on FMLA . Branch manager who I could not stand and hated me wanted to keep me from taking time off. It got approved by HER boss who basically told her " Give her the damn time off for her wedding, For pete's sake She has been through so much with her father being sick for almost 2 years and dying! She is a long term good employee" If it would not have happened I would have just went on my honeymoon anyway and dealt with them when I returned. Start looking, this is only going to get worse there.

I wouldn't just up & quit a job unless I could afford to go without one for awhile. I would definitely start putting in applications as well as speak to HR. I haven't technically requested my days off for the wedding yet, but my supervisor is well aware when it is.

I would hold out, go on my honeymoon, and make her fire me if she doesn't like it. Then collect unemployment while searching for a new jobs. But it also doesn't hurt to keep your eyes peeled for new opportunities in the meantime. It doesn't sound like she'll be fun to work with.
