Need to quit my job

We have a new manager now and today I let her know that less than 3 months it's going to be my wedding and I let her know that I will be going for a honeymoon for a week. Well she tells me that I have to cancel my wedding or leave the job, I'm in shock , I never thought anyone can respond like that....

We have a new manager now and today I let her know that less than 3 months it's going to be my wedding and I let her know that I will be going for a honeymoon for a week.

Well she tells me that I have to cancel my wedding or leave the job, I'm in shock , I never thought anyone can respond like that.

Should I tell her tomorrow that I'm going to leave the job ? Or should I just work until my wedding and then quit?

I'm lost and not sure what to think anymore.

Oh, and document EVERYTHING. Record your relevant conversations with her if you can. She may just give you a case for unlawful termination.

Is this something you had already discussed with your previous manager? If so, her response is not ok. I would take this to HR or anyone higher up. Make sure you have any documentation of the time requested off/approved and or any correspondence you had with your previous manager approving the request or being made aware of it.

First document every conversation regarding this matter here on out. Whether that is with her or upper management. You need to speak directly to her supervisor or your HR dept tomorrow. Was the time already approved? You said "everyone" knows about your wedding. Who is everyone? Co-workers? Management?

That's a bummer! Hopefully someone higher up can step in and help you out. Also reading the comments, know that it is illegal to record someone without telling them you are doing so, please don't go that route

She can't legally give you that ultimatum . Has the time been previously approved? I would still put the request in formally and make a trip to hr when you get a rejection in writing about the wedding .

Even if you fight this // this will not go away the struggle over power . Obviously this individual does not care despite the notice. ( which is wrong and a way to clean house in my opinion) I would stay put and in the mean time keep looking for another job unless things improve.

Call HR! Don't think this is legal. She is a new manager. Trying to clean house and make her presence know. But this sounds illegal. Get your time off and job hunt after the wedding....Praying for you

I would look for a new job, and work there till you find or give them notice and quit right before your wedding just have another job lined up for when you come back

If it's a conversation she is participating in, it's legal. However, I didn't mean secretly record.

    Speak to someone above her.

First, check your contract. There should be information there about when and how you can take PTO. If you're in compliance with that, that's a big stroke in your favor.

Second, gather all correspondence with your previous manager about the wedding. Did they previously approve it? If so. Then they did so on behalf of the company, and you should be protected.

If neither of these things work, suggest a sit-down with HR or another higher up. If you're a good employee, your company will know that and want to take steps to avoid losing you.

Though, I would consider moving on anyway. Cancel your wedding or lose your job is a draconian choice, and this person sounds like they're going to be hell to work for.

Absolutely agree with pp, go directly to HR, is this a very small company or something? She should be able to cover in your absence if it is not. How irritating for you!

I would explain things are booked already and you had it approved. If that doesn't work then go to your hr department. If that doesn't work, then I would give two weeks notice right before your wedding. No reason to be unemployed now unnecessary imo but that's a last case scenario if you definitely wanted to leave. I would hope hr could help.

Get on your job hunt now. Do not quit until something is secured. Also, definitely speak with HR. And bring any documentation that you have that shows the time was already approved.

When did you put the time off request in and was it approved by the previous manager?

That sounds incredibly illegal. However some states are at will and can fire you for no reason. I would talk to HR immediately because she threatened you and is denying you're already approved time.

I always tell people you do not quit a job until you have a new one. So I would be applying now and hope you get a new job before the wedding. Also maybe she will have a change of heart.

ETA: You can definitely be fired for taking unapproved leave (at least in america). Plenty of people work at jobs that have black out dates when they cant take leave including retail and accounting. So, I am pretty sure the decision is legal, although shitty.

No, even if you work a part time retail job, that manager cannot tell you to quit your job. Definitely look up your companies policies on vacation time, hold on to any documentation showing prior approval for time off, and continue prepping your workplace for your vacation. When the time comes, and you've followed all policies, spoken to all superior managers and HR, *do not quit.* Leaving the job of your own accord means you will be ineligible to file for unemployment benefits. If you've stayed within all policy guidelines and such, the only thing they can do is terminate you, which would look bad for them, since you did nothing wrong.
