Need advice on how to cover this ugly piece of our venue (pic)

Katy, on May 13, 2015 at 10:26 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 28

Our wedding venue is a historic mill. It's beautiful, I love it, blah blah blah. BUT.....I guess they decided there should be a lame mural of the mill inside the mill?? How do I cover this? It's a cement wall so I'm not sure how anything would hang there. I've been picturing fabric, or a ribbon wall, just not sure how to execute that....

Do they allow you to use 3M hooks or anything? Those ones that just have gummy stuff on the back then you just pull the tab to remove it. I use those for small photos and for Xmas lights, and they really leave absolutely no markings.

Or do you know someone who is a handyman? Maybe he/she could make a PVC pipe thing for you to hang curtains on.

I googled "streamer wall" and while most photos were "meh" I like these. Maybe something like this?

You could do some flat bed sheets to cover it and then have the ribbon wall (on top of the sheet) go across so that the mural doesn't peek through at all.

can you thumb tack into the ceiling? you could thread fishing line through the seam at the end of the bedsheets and have the fishing line go around the corners into the wood ceiling (it looks like there is a metal beam along that front wall?)

Another one. Eta: also, I have no real suggestion on how to hang them because I suck at stuff like that, sorry.

I like the streamer wall look, you could use it as a decent backdrop for photos too. Maybe throw some lights in the mix.

I am doing this for my photobooth with crepe paper, i was just trying to think of ways to completely block out the mural before you put the streamers or ribbons up.

I vote streamer wall. Talk to the venue and see if you can use the 3M hooks to hang it. If not, grab some PVC pipe and make a stand. There are plenty of instructions on how to make them online. I haven't made one, but I bet it's not as hard as it seems.

I like the streamer wall too, and ribbons, I'm just not sure how to hang it. I'm afraid the 3M hooks won't hold through the night. Are they super strong KT?

Not sure about tacking into the ceiling. We can't leave any marks and it's a pretty sturdy place. Tape (or possibly 3M hooks) might be the best bet. I just don't want my cover to look as cheap and crappy as this mural.

There are all different strength 3m hooks i think the highest i have seen is 20lbs? they probably go higher . you could do the PVC pipe with fishing line through it tied to two 3M hooks on the ends.

ETA: and then for the side with the cut out you could put a tablecloth over to the other side

@Katy- I use 3M hooks during the holidays, if you put them up the night before (if you can) it will allow it to bond more and should hold throughout the night.

Tada, how to build a frame... thought I'd made it wider to fit the wall.

Streamers or ribbon would look awesome.

OK, awesome! I think I can do a ribbon wall and then hang it from heavy duty 3M hooks. Not that I wanted a DIY project....but I also really don't like that mural. Thanks guys!

That mural is pretty awful. I think that 3M hooks in my experience have been extremely strong. You could almost put up flat sheets and then have streamers on top, because otherwise if you just use streamers you'll still be able to see the mural behind the gaps. Or you could cover the sheets with large white paper flowers or something like that.

The other option other than hanging is to get some insulating foam boards which are stiff and won't move around as much as something that's hanging. You'd have to cover them or paint them still. They're also really light and easy to transport (however they are brittle so it you ran into something they could snap in half).

Ok, if like a brownie troop or some boy scouts painted that, it's adorable.

If an adult painted it...... I hope they didn't charge.

You could probably also rent a backdrop from a decor company.

We can't put them up the night before. We can't even get into the venue until 1pm (wedding is at 5pm). We can just do it first thing though.

I really don't want to build a frame. I have tried so hard to limit the DIY projects....so I think just hanging the ribbons from a dowel will be enough. That sounds like a lot of work in itself.

Honestly? I'd just leave it. By the time you get chairs and tables in there, no one will even notice it. I think it's kinda cute....

Yea- they make different sizes for different weights (of the 3M brand hooks). I can't imagine a streamer wall would be SUPER heavy. Maybe sew some ribbon onto the top corners of a white sheet, and that could be used to hold onto the hooks. Same idea with whatever you do overtop (if you do 2 layers like a white sheet then a streamer wall).

I have always agreed with you, Celia. Not this time. LOL. It is not cute and FH is not having it either.

LadyMonk - I like the way you think. Renting sounds way easier than doing it myself. I'll look into that too. Maybe our rental company has a backdrop.

If you're crafty you may be able to make a free standing backdrop out of pvc pipes and hang extra long curtains from it. That's what I use for my backdrops for candy and dessert buffets. I v thunk my largest coast me $40 to build and I purchase inexpensive fabrics and sew quick curtains to hang.
