Name Change Regrets?

kahlcara, on June 19, 2014 at 3:42 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 46

I just changed my name-- SS last week, license etc earlier this week, bank stuff today. I wanted to change my name eventually but hadn't yet because of moving and law school. Now I kind of regret doing it. DH and I had talked about wanting to have the same last name, and he offered to change his if I didn't want to change mine, but that would sound weird. Now I miss my old last name. I'm thinking about doing a name change through the court, probably in 2 years when I need to renew my license, to add it back as a 2nd middle name. Anyone else regret changing your name?

I haven't changed my name officially yet but I am waiting on my paper work to come back so that I can go change my name but I am feeling kind of sad about losing my last name. It's not that I don't feel proud and honored to take my DH's last name it's just kind of sentimental for me.

I dropped my birth middle name and replaced it with my maiden last name. Everything's spelled out on Facebook, etc. The only time I abbreviate my middle name now is at work simply because I can't fit all of those names on to a signature line, lol.

I regretted changing my name for my first marriage, so I am not changing it this time. I just really like my name and the culture behind it. For my first marriage, I made my maiden name a 2nd middle name, but honestly, I may as well have done away with it completely, because it always got dropped by businesses and computer systems and whatnot (which often only have room for one middle name).

I'm changing my last name, but I am definitely going to miss my maiden name! It's a bittersweet change, but I know I'll be glad I did it. Give it time...you might change your mind again.

Ill miss it for the Simplicity and convenience factor. Just mastered my new signature and my new last will be so long that i had to abbreviate my double first name to simply initials.

I love love love my last name. If anyone else has it, I could guarantee they are some how related.

With that being said, my new name will be soooooo much easier to use, plus it makes for a super hot name.

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I am very much looking forward to changing my name!

I'm like Emily - I really regretted changing my name for my first marriage, so I didn't do it for my second. And there's nothing "silly" about hyphenating, unless you're that character from Murphy Brown, Corky Sherwood-Forest.

Though, let's be honest, if we could have a name like that, we would ALL do it.

I will definitely miss my maiden name, I just changed it at the SS office yesterday. It was really important to DH for me to take his last name though, so I did. Smiley smile

I was going to but now I'm reconsidering it just because what a pain-in-the-A it's going to be to change EVERTHING. I also learned last night if you do get a hyphen...it actually cost money. Plus FMIL is hounding at me every time “You are taking his last name, RIGHT?” Yes I am, but I want to keep mine too.

@ Anisea, I will give it time. Changing it once was enough that I don't want to deal with it again anytime soon. And I don't want to hyphen, I've heard it's a pain. Some of it might just be the difficulties I'm having with it right now that are annoying--starting a new job tomorrow and I can't change my name on paperwork yet because I don't have my "official" license--just a temp one that says it can't be used for ID.

It took me 5 months after marriage to change mine. I had always imagined changing my name when I was married, but when it came down to it, it was very hard! I had such a sinking feeling when I finally changed it and had some serious regret. But in the last 2 weeks, I'm starting to enjoy it. As Anisea mentioned, give it a little time. I get more comfortable every time I see/write/type it.

Super excited to change mine! I'm going from a semi typical name to a last name I've never heard before I met my FH, but is still short like what my last name is right now.

Like the other ladies have said, definitely think about it over the next few years before you do it again!

I work with FH's brother in a fairly large office so I debated it a lot because I thought it would be annoying if people who don't know us assume we are married (we work in same dept too). But my future brother-in-law assured me I shouldn't worry about it and we'll just correct people, and seemed to encourage me changing it which is really sweet because I feel I am being welcomed to the family! So now I am actually really excited to change it and can't wait to use it. It will have some nice alliteration too because it's a B name so I'll be BB

I'm also in the minority-I've lived my entire life with a really common last name. I'm pretty excited my new name is less common (but still fairly common) and my monogram won't change!

I love alliteration, too. I'll be Jennifer James. My name could do porn.

I can't wait to get rid of my last name! Unfortunately I hate my middle name, too and my mother said the SS office automatically drops your middle name and uses your maiden name. Damn. Even if they don't, I'll be stuck with one of my hated names, but luckily it'll be a middle name so not many people will know what it is, just like now!
