Nails: Gels or Acrylic????

Spicydeene, on October 17, 2012 at 11:46 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

It has been over 10 years that I've had artificial nails and I want to do this for my wedding. My last day is today of work is today so I want to get them done tomorrow. I'm lost on what to ask for?

I type nonstop for a living and prefer short nails. So this will be temporary. Do ppl still get acrylic nails? What's new & "in"??

I'm a HUGE advocate for the gel. It doesn't damage your nails as much, drys much quicker, you don't have to worry about smudging or anything after they are done.

Plus, it's much cheaper than acrylic.

Agree with Lizz I prefer gel but where I am from it's more $$ for gel and the Acrylic is cheaper.

Really? That's interesting! I haven't gotten an acrylic in IDK, about 4 years so I haven't paid that much attention since they just ruin your nails.

Plus, gel has some super fun colors Smiley smile

I have never done gels. In the rare occasion when I get my nails gone, I have gotten acrylic nails, but I don't like the damage.

My next visit (pre-wedding mani/pedi pampering) will be for gel nails.

Are gel nails also known as "solar" nails? My local salon doesn't offer gel, but do have solar nails.

I've only gotten my nails done professionally once (I paint my own nails & now cant have them done for work) but I did gel & it was wonderful, lasted long & was a sinch in removal. My mom gets Acrylic often, they break easily, & rip nailbed off too. Can leave for weak brittle nails. Gel is more expensive, but splurge on it.

I've had both, I prefer acrylic because my nails are already thin and break easy. Gel is just like a fast drying nail polish it doesn't strengthin the nail and 9 times out of 10 my nail breaks really far down with gel. My mom gets gel and her nails are thick and long and she still has her nails break really far down as well. With acrylic I tell them to make them as short as possible so I can still have the look just not the length and to not pack on the powder like most people do.

I am a big fan of gel. I had acrylics on for 4 years and switched to regular polish and occasionally gel. The gel is not damaging like acrylics and is easy to remove. Its long lasting and if done correctly, will not chip

I'm addicted to gel nail polish! I used to get acryllic nails put on, but I stopped because it was ruining them. I quickly found that I could grow my own nails, but they peel, bend, and break.

I started getting manicures weekly, and then the gel nail polish came out. It's so wonderful! It's dry when you leave the salon (feel free to dig around in your purse for your keys), it lasts for 2 weeks, and it adds strength to my nails (no more bending or peeling).

My only advice if you do get gel nails is DO NOT PEEL THE POLISH OFF. You will ruin your nails this way. The polish should be taken off by a professional, or on your own by soaking them in acetone.

I got shellac nail polish since I hate fake nails and type for a living. I absolutely loved the shellac because it lasted for over 2 weeks. The only PITA was that it is really hard to remove yourself.

Hmm, I guess what I got yesterday really was a gel manicure. The salon called it "shellac" polish. One thing I really liked about the polish is that it filled in all the imperfections on my nails left when the acrylic nails came off. I like knowing that the polish won't peel or chip.

I love the gels. I get them done once every three weeks, they dont' smudge or chip, and if you start out short (maybe a week before your wedding?) they'll be a bit longer but last through your honeymoon.

I get them done because my real nails suck and I need to look professional, but I do love them. Fun colors (I'd go kind of neutral for your wedding....) and indestructble!

I did gel recently and loved it! I do not think I would go back to acrylic after that. It stayed on long and did not damage my nails as bad as acrylic would.

My plan was just do them once and let them grow out. Yes, I do remember the acrylic damaging my nails.

We're not honeymooning this year - just a minimoon and I'll be back at work on Wed. I've been wondering about the gels - I think I'll go for it. Plus a nice pedi too!
