My flowergirl won't wear a dress

Cavan, on July 8, 2011 at 5:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 39

My FH's niece will be 6 years old when we get married. I have considered having her as our flower girl but she vehemently hates dresses. And from the sound of it she is not interested in the job at all. If she (and her mom) decide that she wants to be in the wedding party do you think it would be okay to put her in a little tux instead? And if so, do you think she should wear a white tux (as it's closer to a flower girl) or a black tux so she matches the boys (and her daddy)?

Thanks!

Does she like leggings? Can you come up with a cute outfit with leggings?

I personally would think of another girl to be my flower girl. This is YOUR wedding and it really should be the way you want it to be. Unless it is very important for her to be in the wedding, i'd find another pretty little girl to do the job. If you must buy her a tux i'd go for a white one. You have a better chance at making her look like a flower girl. Good luck!

She will wear leggings but I have no idea how that would work. It's a formal occasion.

white leggings and a long flowy shirt- aka short dress!

I think a tux would be too weird even if it was white.

I wouldn't put her in a tux- there are plenty of non-dress options that still look cute and "little girl". You don't want her being mistaken for a ring bearer.

Would she wear a skirt? That could be the next option. Or find another FG. If she's not excited about the job, then I could only imagine what she might do when she's walking down the aisle. She might make mean faces or something lol

I have to agree with Ebony, I would not put her in all. You still have time , maybe she will be willing to wear a dress by your wedding. Good luck!!!

Wow, I'm surprised that no one likes the tux idea. It was my FMIL's idea and I thought it was cute. Okay, no tux then.

The original plan was to not have a flower girl at all but FMIL is persistent in having her granddaughter in the wedding. She also wanted to have my FH's nephew pulled in on a wagon as he will still be a baby but I thought that was too corny for the elegant look I was going for.

I guess we won't have a flower girl.

I agree with Brian C. on both accounts. If she wants to be in it, then she needs to wear a dress. I would definitely NOT put her in a tux....

But if she doesn't even seem interested in the job, then don't force it. If you don't have any other choices for flower girls, just don't have one! We're having two flower girls and no ring bearers.

@ Brian - she is definitely a little spoiled (gosh, I feel bad just for writing that) as she's the first grandchild and she always cries until she gets her way. So, I think it best to just not have her in the wedding party. She can look cute wearing whatever she wants sitting in her chair next to her mommy and little brother.

(Sorry, posted my comment and then saw yours, didn't mean to sound redundant!!)

I would tell your FMIL too bad. It's not like she's YOUR kid, you aren't obligated to have her in the wedding...

I'm all for going against gender stereotypes..but ya from what you say it seems she's just spoiled and it's not like part of who she is ..well not that a 6 year old has a complicated self concept but still lol..I think that if a girl is in a tux it will take the attention off you, people will be confused or talking about it..so she wears skirts? I'd go with a flowy skirt if she will wear it.

My FG was my 6 yo SIL. She HATES dresses, but we told her that if she didn't wear a dress, she wouldn't be part of the wedding that everyone else was a part of. She changed her mind pretty quickly! LOL.

We had thought of putting her in a tux, but still... we went against it. I didn't want het to wear that to the wedding, so we gave her the choice of wearing a dress or not being part of it at all. That's how we approached it and it worked.

But its your wedding you can have her dressed any way you want, maybe before the wedding she could change her mind. Its your day and if you want her in the tux, then do it, but it is little different, but . I personally want my flower girls in dresses! She could change her mind about the dress.

No, no skirts or long shirts that could possibly look like a dress (it's been tried and she was on to that scheme pretty quick). No girly colors either. She's very much a tomboy and has been since birth.

Sorry for sounding so negative, it was a creative idea but I could see a lot of issues with it.

@Ebony - I didn't think you were being negative at all. I want to hear what other people think of the idea. I appreciate the honesty!

Yeah maybe if she wont make any sort of compermise than she is best left out. It seems like this could just be the beginning of MANY problems with this little girl.

I also agree with "theres too many hands in the pot" You and your FH decide whos in the wedding not anyone else! Is YOU want her to help out maybe she can help out in another way.
