My dress is too tight

So.Many.Questions, on June 14, 2016 at 12:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

I just had my first dress fitting. My ( tight ass mermaid) dress is way too tight, it came up over my butt (barely) but it won't fasten in the back at all. I had a baby a few weeks ago, so I'm still up 20 lbs from where I used to be, and because we're 3 months out time is limited. I'm freaking out.

The attendant mentioned adding gussets, does anyone know how much this alters the dress and how labor intensive they are? She said they're expensive to do and I'm trying to keep the damage down. Also, if anyone knows about any diet and excercise regimens that are safe for nursing moms that'd be great too.

How about having a corset back put in? I'm sure you don't want the added pressure of losing 20 lbs so quickly!

I feel your pain! Although, I didn't have a baby so all my weight gain was courtesy of pizza, and chocolate...lol

I have kicked my workouts into high gear (kickboxing 3 times a week, cardio and weight training the other days) and I've been eating a lot better. I ended up ordering a cheaper dress as a back up in case I can't get into mine so I don't totally lose my mind stressing out about it.

I don't have any diet and exercise tips for nursing moms, but I'd suggest starting slowly for the first week to get your body back into it and form a habit. Walking, going up and down the stairs etc. all with baby in tow should help Smiley smile

3 months is enough time to drop 15 lbs. Except you don't have 3 months. You have more like two.

Get on a deficit of 500 calories below maintainance do your cardio and lift weights.

You should be able to drop the weight if you are consistent.

Ask your doctor or a dietician about the right amount of calories to consume while nursing but trying to lose weight because you don't want your milk to dry up from not eating enough. Unless formula is an option for you. I know everyone has different feelings about nursing vs formula.

Congrats on your baby! I would definitely think about seeing a nutritionist. I think the goal is to loose empty calories but still make sure your getting the nutrition required to breastfeed and keep up your energy for taking care of a newborn. Exercise as much as you possibly can even though your probably low on time and energy right now. Even going for a walk with the stroller once a day if you can.

Breastfeeding burns about 500 calories a day, so don't switch to formula! Just eat very healthy, clean, drink water, no soda, watch the sweets, no fast food, etc.

I lost about 60 lbs in 6 months breastfeeding and exercising. You can do this!!!! I only sat down to feed the baby and sleep. When I wasn't breastfeeding, pumping, or sleeping I was cleaning etc. because I was a single mom working full time. I think I lost a lot of weight because I was doing everything alone too, it was exhausting.

There's really no exercise that wouldn't be okay for a breastfeeding mom

Go swimming.... a lot! Also long walks, eating healthy, and light weight lifting if you've been cleared by the doctor. If you have stairs walk up and down the stairs. Congrats on the baby! I had mine 9 months ago and still working on losing the weight.

Thanks y'all for the suggestions, I've never had to worry about weight before so Im completely clueless. If it weren't for the wedding I'd keep it!

@Dena that would probably be the easier and cheaper alteration, but the dress has buttons down the back and it's my favorite part so I don't want to change it too much.

There's no way to avoid alteration, but when I drop some of this weight off will that help with the cost?

Breast feeding should help you burn calories. Eat as clean as you can. take it to a good seamstress who is experience in changing dresses not just altering but transforming. There was a lady in my home town who took my mom's BM dress (size 16) and made it into a prom dress for me (size 8, including adding sleeves and making it a fit a flare). Most ppl didn't even recognize the dress. You need someone with that kind of experience. And look into good shape wear.

I would focus on what you can do to the dress (corset back, letting it out as much as possible) than what you MIGHT be able to do to you.

Cutting calories while breastfeeding is a good way to tank your supply, and while breastfeeding also burns calories, it also makes you consume more via hunger. It's more important that you be able to feed baby well than lose the weight.

Have you discussed the options with your seamstress?

First of all, congrats on the birth of your child! Second, I would also suggest adding a corset back - this can help alot.

My SIL teaches zoomba, lifts and does an assortment of cardio and is still breast feeding. I wouldn't start any routine without speaking with your doctor first but as long as you are in good health and consuming enough healthy calories you should be able to be pretty active

Is it in the ribs it won't fit our through the stomach? Where it is having issues at can really mean a whole lot of difference. Also are you breastfeeding? If so that can help you lose weight.

    Congrats on the baby!

Absolutely do not lower your calories. Nursing bodies do not work the way non-nursing bodies do. Decreasing calories can cause a decrease in milk supply. Not all women lose a ton from breastfeeding. Actually, most nursing women don't lose it all until after baby weans or begins table foods. Your body gives to your baby before you so keep that in mind. Dropping more than a pound a week is not recommended for nursing mothers either, as it can alter breast milk and release broken down amino acids that can make baby sick. Talk to a Licensed Board Certified Lactation Consultant about any supplements, diets, etc. Most doctors and dietitians are not versed in breastfeeding.

Regular exercise, clean eating, and lots of water will help and are of course perfectly safe. If you are less than 6 months out from birth your body is still recovering physically whether you feel it or not. Also, hormones play a role all the way to 6-9 months out.

I had to change my dress to a corset back, and it has buttons. I am having my buttons moved to below the corset so they are still there and centered, just lower.

So you could still potentially do the corset back. It would be a much less stressful alternative.

If you had a baby 2 weeks ago and breastfeeding you should be fine. I lost all my baby weight within 6 weeks by walking everyday.. Not even all that rigorously.. Tbh. Don't lower your calorie intake unless approved by your ob/gyn. Worst case scenario is you might have to get it altered but I would look into that anyway just because your body changes with pregnancy and child birth.

Congratulations on your new addition! Please consult your doctor before making any drastic changes in your diet or starting an exercise program. Once you're approved for exercise, check out Jamie Eason's program.

My friend (who has 3 babies) does not lose weight when breastfeeding... In fact, she gains! I would focus more on changing the dress rather than putting that much pressure on yourself as a new mom.
