My destination wedding experience as a bride

Yoice, on April 5, 2019 at 10:44 AM Posted in Planning 1 14
Sorry this is long! I wanted to give you all my experience during my wedding weekend.

So my wedding was a Saturday and husband and I decided to arrive Wednesday morning to set up welcome bags and divide all items for welcome party and wedding. It was all full hands once we got there with our 5 luggages!

After we were all done we were ready to go to enjoy our stay and welcome our guest starting the next day.

Thursday we were getting a large portion of our family and a few friends so we woke up early and enjoyed breakfast followed by a couples massage we got curtesy of the hotel. Right after this our guest started arriving. We found ourselves hosting everyone during most of the day. We met almost everyone at the lobby to welcome them and then took the to the bar for drinks and this went on through most of Thursday and Friday. It was great because everyone felt so welcome and they could tell how appreciative we were to have them there.

Thursday during dinner we claimed a section of the buffet (all inclusive hotel) that had multiple tables that sits 10 people each so we decided this would be our area from now on. We got to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner always with multiple of our guest (if not all) since everyone was always sitting at the same spot. Although we emphasized that everyone should do their own thing they just all wanted to spend time together and do activities as a group which we loved. Our guest was divided by 4 groups (his family, mine family, his friends and my friends) by the end of the trip it was all one big group. Everyone hanging out together at the pool, the bars, the beach, the clubs even after the wedding ended that we left for our honeymoon.

I never being to a destination wedding so I didn’t know what to expect exactly. I wanted to have a more intimate time with everyone, I wanted to hangout with friends and family and have fun not just one day but I didn’t think it would like this. It honestly succeeded my expectations. I knew we would have time to spend it with everyone but never to the extend we did.

Welcome bags:

This was a hit! People found it very useful specially the young crowd that doesn’t really pack much of emergency kits. I made sure to add everything enough for 2 or more since most room would be for 2 people.

I had personalized welcome bags and included the following:

  • Hangover kit (Advil, Tylenol, Alka-Seltzer, Emergency-C, Tums, Bandaids, Antibacterial wipes)
  • Tequila bottles (little ones)
  • Tajin (little ones)
  • Tabasco (little ones)
  • Hand sanitizer (little ones)
  • Personalized mints
  • Tissues
  • Itinerary
  • Personalized door sign
  • Map of the hotel
  • Brochure of things to do while in Mexico (I got this at the airport - was not plan but very helpful)

Events:

I didn’t want to overwhelm people with a lot of events. I wanted them all to take this as a vacation. I wasn’t planning on people wanting to do a lot with us so a lot of the things we did was spontaneous.

On the itinerary card I included:

  • Friday: Welcome party at 8 pm. This was at the beach, an all white party. I made sure to send invites out for this since it was an all white party, I included this and the invitation at the website and when I spoke to everyone I made sure to remind them. This party was soooo fun! We all had a blast and it was a perfect way to start the wedding festivities. I kept the decor simple, high top tables with flowers arrangement in a half cut coconut. Some appetizers and open bar. I had a lounge area for the older people to sit and a shoe valet to leave your shoes at since the party was at the sand.
  • Saturday: Wedding day with pick up and drop off information. Our wedding wasn’t at the hotel and I provided transportation for everyone so I made sure everyone knew the time and place for this.

I did not have a rehearsal dinner plan since we had the welcome party. We had our rehearsal Friday afternoon and then headed to the buffet for dinner. It looked like a rehearsal dinner because everyone met there all dress in white ready to head to the beach for the party. We all left the restaurant and walked to the party at 8 pm. Not planned but it was great!

Wedding:

Like I mention I made sure I had transportation for everyone. I had bathroom baskets for both man and woman and it was so handy! Our big day was very windy so the ladies and gentlemen took advantage of hair spray, hair brushes, bobby-pins and so on. I also included some medication in case need it, mint, gum, toothpick, some body spray, and a lot more. I also had sandals to make sure they all danced all night long and this was another big hit! The ladies loved them and we had none left.

Our guest had a blast! They noticed all the little things we did to accommodate them. They did not only enjoyed the wedding but the entire weekend. Some have told me is their best trip yet and others the best weekend of their life. All the hard work paid off. I would do it all over again!

Wow this is very helpful!!! I’m also doing a DW and I’m starting to see what and how I want the week to go.. I’m thinking of doing welcome backs as well but I don’t really want to carry all of that. How did you handed them out? My resort charge $4 for delivery into their rooms, and I want to just hand them out as they arrive but FH says it’ll be too much and we won’t be able to enjoy because we’ll be waiting for people to arrive, sounds like that’s How your first 2 days went. I want to have some optional events such as excursions added to the website that way people can vote if they want to attend or not, also a welcome party.. anyways, congratulations and awesome job!! Sounds like you put a lot of work into the planning.. now I have to figure out how mine will be.. was it stressful!??

It was so worth taking the bags. My resort also charged a fee but only for room delivery. I asked them to give them away at check in and that was free. Ask to see if they have that option. I loved receiving people but we mostly did it for the large group. We had 3 groups that arrive on the same flight so we were went to the reception a total of 5 times which made it easy. Out of our 45 guest we only missed check in for 13 guest but we met them at the bar or buffett right after they arrived. It was hectic so heads up!
Most of my guest were only there for the weekend 3 nights 4 days so they didn’t do much. If you have a whole week you should schedule some excursions and make it optional for people to attend. It’ll be fun to do things with everyone.
Planning was not stressful but I LOVE planning! I have done it for multiple friends and I’m very passionate about it but the room and booking was very stressful. Some guest told me last minute they weren’t going to make it while majority waited for the last minute to book. That was stressful and I had to contanstaly text people which I hate doing. This is something out of my hands and I couldn’t control which was the stressful part. I took a trip to our destination a year before and check venue, vendors and did make up and hair trial. If you can do this! The rest is just everyday planning and organizing specially since you’ll be traveling with a lot.
Tip: take your dress with you! Do not put it in the luggage. Most airlines consider this a carry on item so you can take the dress plus a personal item.
Also know where you put each stuff. I had a list to make sure if I had to look for something specific last minute or upon my arrival that knew what luggage it was in. I packed one for honeymoon so this was not touch during our stay and like this I didn’t have to be packing and unpacking.
If you have any questions let me know if I can help!

Yes, for room delivery.. I will definitely ask about that, I didn’t even think about asking that. Im
assuming most will be there for the weekend only. Those are actually great tips.. I didn’t even think about them.. thank you Smiley smile

I’m glad you found it helpful! I got married in Playa Del Carmen at an ocean view venue call Villa La Joya. When I went I had most of my vendors narrow down and the venue already booked. They have a condo across the street from the venue that they gave me to stay for free during those days and I was able to meet all vendors and go thru all the details while being on site. I did hair and make up trial.
Make sure you make appointments with all vendors and ask more less the meet and greet how long it takes. Give yourself time to plan for breakfast and lunch in between appointments. It found it very worth it to discuss it all first hand mostly because I booked all the vendors myself since the venue allowed me too not like hotels.

My guest stayed at Iberostar which is next door. Is a 7 minute car drive because how far in the hotel and the house are from the main street. The hotel has 5 different resorts all inclusive. I picked Paraiso Lindo which is the middle one. This allowed guest to use the accommodations of our hotel as well as the two below them so gave them more options for restaurants and so on. Maya was one of my favorites which is the one above Lindo which of course is a higher price. Grande is out of this world (very exclusive and expensive) but is adults only so it wasn’t even an option for us. Overall they’re all good and hotel staff was beyond friendly. One of my guest stayed at Senses Riviera Maya by Artisan and it was beautiful! Much reasonable price and inside La Joya residencial community. I believe is adults only and is not all inclusive and is a much smaller hotel so not sure if they can accommodate 100 guest.
Please let me know if there’s anything I can help you with. Vendors or any questions! I would love to help.
