Multiple Cakes vs. Big Wedding Cake

Danielle, on September 17, 2016 at 12:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

FH and I can't seem to decide if we'd prefer one big traditional cake or multiple smaller cakes in multiple flavors. Any thoughts one way or another?

I suppose smaller cakes would be easier to transport vs the big cake...

A big cake can also be done with different flavored layers. Smaller cakes are usually less expensive.

Several smaller cakes certainly gives you more versatility and possibly more bang for your buck. If a big elegant cake (that can have several different flavors) isn't an essential part of your vision, the several smaller cakes sounds more practical.

Have you discussed any of this with your baker yet? You shouldn't worry about delivery as they deliver all the time. I'm doing one large cake but that's my preference. 4 layers, all vanilla layers except for one. One will be lemon for the select few that would prefer something different. Our guest count will end up around 110-120 probably.

There's also the cupcake idea that people are doing. One small one or two tiered cake for you two to cut for pictures then a ton of cupcakes for the guests

I like the grand look of the big cake so that's what we're doing. I would also highly advise you have the cake baker transport the cake/cakes with whichever option you choose.

You can still have multiple flavors in a tiered wedding cake. Many bakers will allow you to choose different flavors for each tier.

FH is anti-cupcake haha. He and I have a system where if one of us really hates a wedding idea, we can veto it. Cupcakes got the veto haha.

Who hates cupcakes? My man, I guess Smiley tongue

We love the look of a big, 3-tier cake. We're doing each tier in a different flavor.

We loved the idea of the big cake. We did different flavors per layer but we were very traditional. We also had cookies.

We're doing one large 4 tier cake for about 120-130 guests. Each tier will be a different flavor/filling.

I thought about doing something smaller, but the big multi tier cake is just so elegant! The cakes in the picture you posted just don't really look like wedding cakes to me. And, like others have said, let your baker worry about transportation. They are literally pros at it.

We are doing small pretty cutting cake and bigger sheet cakes for to serve the guests. It was the most cost effective way for me.

We had a small two tier cake as the bride's cake and a three layer chocolate cake as the groom's cake. We had cake for days..... could you do separate cakes for the bride and groom? Then you kind of get the best of both?

I prefer the multiple cake option, my better half likes a tiered cake, so we're probably having a smallish tiered cake. Smiley smile

We had 109 people. We did a variety of small cakes- variety of different flavors. Each cake was 16 slices. I got rave reviews on the cake and all the different kinds. I should have ordered more chocolate though- it ran out first!!

Edit: more info- we used one of the cakes as our cut cake (it was decorated prettier)!!

I prefer the look of a big cake! Each tier of ours (4 tiers) was a different flavor and filling.

I'm not very traditional so I love the multiple wedding cake idea, that's what we're planning to do!
